The trip to Pokagon was prefaced by a stop at the Bob Evans at Auburn, where we had a somewhat amusing happenstance. We order breakfast, get our drinks (Coke -yuk- for her, OJ for me), and five minutes later our actually very pleasant and helpful waitress comes over and asks, "How are you all doing?" I think to myself as we say "okay", "Just how would one f up Coke and OJ? She runs along to check on our meals. Later, after most of said meal, she asks if we want drink refills. She comes back with a tray of waters for other guests, an OJ for me- then pauses and says to Laurie, "I'll bring you your coke in just a second. I don't know why, but I got you an iced tea instead."
Ah. That's how you f it up.
The ride was uneventful- though it was surprising to be heading north on I-69 on a weekend (much less a holiday weekend) without seeing one boat being trailered up. We began to despair of the weather as there were clouds as far as you could see- until a few miles out, we saw blue skies. Once at the lake we were half cirrus clouds (south) and half blue skies (north) the entire time.

Scrappy, unhappy at being left home. Hey, if dogs didn't poop in the sand... |
Now usually when we go to Pokagon, we go to the beach at the Potawatomi Inn, but they had it all blocked off and sent us on a twisting, turning journey that led us to the campground beach. Which as you can see below, was all the way across the basin from the Inn.

Damn handsome guy on the beach... |
|
And for a holiday weekend we saw two cops the whole trip- and here's one, chewing a ski-doo rider about where his kids should sit. |
|
That's me dead center, going swimming. Water was great, and so were the big ol' boat wakes. |
|
Laurie got herself the two-scooper of all time... |
|
No surprise that by 1:30 they were out of vanilla... |
|
Check out dude dead center. Put me in mind of one of Miss Jane's bird-watcher troop friends. |
The dude in red above I tried and failed to get a surreptitious shot of his t-shirt. It cracked me up. I failed, but here is what it looked like:

Afterwards I was hungry and stopped for a burger. |
Once home, we sat outside where Scrappy stared at the cat that was staring at another dog...
While I... well...
Meanwhile, my son and GF went to Hurshtown to fish. Brought poles, hooks... but no bait. Needless to say, he got shut out.
Chris:
ReplyDeleteThat picture of you reminds me of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (right locale...lol). But I think your MIND is in a much better place, and has been for some time.
Typically crowded..same back in PA with lake beaches.
Never knew ICE CRAM CONES came in WHOPPER size...WTG, Laurie!
Nice burger, Chris...LOL.
And you have to top that off with (you got it).
Glad Scrappy got some wildlife ":watching" in, too.
NO BAIT? Anyone bring a small shovel to dig for nightcrawlers?
WTH?
Looks like fun, though.
Stay safe up there, brother.

Hi, Chris!
ReplyDeleteThe big takeaway from this post is the shocking headline that you like OJ. You might change you mind after watching American Crime Story.
Mrs. Shady and I were at a restaurant a couple of years ago and the server was so super attentive that she smothered us with service. After practically every bite of food we took, she swung by the table to ask how things were going. I was getting embarrassed talking with my mouth full! There's such a thing as letting people have some space and enjoy their meal, right?
That first picture gave me the summertime blues. There's nothing quite as sad as an unhappy Scrappy with no one to head butt. :)
That picture of you wading in the water gave me the heebie-jeebies. You must not have noticed but, to your right, a large fin is clearly visible cutting through the water and heading straight toward you!
It looks like you guys had fun at that cooling off spot. It reminds me of Gifford Pinchot State Park, a campground, picnic area and lake my family visited when I was a kid.
Have a safe and Scrappy 4th, good buddy Chris, and come over and see me tomorrow if you have time.
All fins were actually the heads of little kids.
DeleteIf Scrappy enjoys head butting, he's in for a long summer. One time was more than enough, believe me.
