Dumbasses and Hitler
This is one of those "In all fairness" posts. You see, I am against the use of Hitler to describe anyone and anything- as I may have mentioned a few dozen times. Shall we retire to the White House Press Room, where we find Sean Spicer...
“We didn't use chemical weapons in World War II. You know, you had a, you know, someone as despicable as Hitler who didn't even sink to using chemical weapons,” Spicer said. “So you have to if you're Russia, ask yourself: Is this a country that you, and a regime, that you want to align yourself with? You have previously signed onto international agreements, rightfully acknowledging that the use of chemical weapons should be out of bounds by every country.”
And later, as a "clarification"...
“I think when you come to sarin gas, there was no — he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing,” Spicer said, mispronouncing Assad's name. “I mean, there was clearly, I understand your point, thank you. Thank you, I appreciate that. There was not in the, he brought them into the Holocaust center, I understand that. What I am saying in the way that Assad used them, where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent, into the middle of towns, it was brought — so the use of it. And I appreciate the clarification there. That was not the intent.”
So let's look at the facts here. No chemical weapons in WWII? From the UK's History Learning Site:
There is no doubt that most protagonists in World War Two had stockpiles of poison gas. By 1945, the Germans had 7,000 tons of Sarin alone – enough to kill the occupants of 30 cities the size of Paris. The Americans also had sizeable quantities of poison gases stockpiled. Britain experimented with anthrax on remote Scottish islands to see its impact on the animal population there. All countries that possessed poison gas in any form also had the potential to deliver it on an enemy.
With such potency and the ability to change the course of a battle why wasn’t poison gas used – even as a last resource? It would appear certain that the fear of retaliation was the reason and the fear that the enemy may well have developed a poison gas more virulent that anything the other side had.
So at least that part is true, though we did use it just 20 years before in WWI, so I doubt it's something a person versed in history would want to bring up.
Hitler "not even sinking" to it? Please. First off, Hitler would damn well have used them had he thought he could get away with it- 7,000 tons of sarin? Second, before you want to give him credit for not gassing his own people, the Holocaust encyclopedia states that there were 214,000 Jews living in Germany proper by 1937, with more than half the previous Jewish population having emigrated. Hitler deported and then had shot or gassed "160,000 to 180,000" of that population. Jews or not, those were "his own people." Please tell me again what Hitler would not sink to.
"He was not using the gas the same way Assad is doing." Really? His people, under his governance, for the crime of being the wrong place at the wrong time. Tell me, Sean, what IS the difference? That's a line too fine for these bespectacled eyes.
"Holocaust Center." Is that the new PC way of saying concentration camp- or death camp? "I think I'll meet some buddies at the neighborhood Holocaust center and shoot some hoops." So what ARE you saying here, Sean? That it's okay to murder innocents if you gather them into one particular place? That it makes a difference WHERE you die? How about WHY you die? Because there is the thing. They died because Assad is a big fat fricking monster. Just like the Jews and Gypsies died because Hitler was a big fat fricking monster. They died because the Russians would rather play "who's on my team" than give a damn about any non-Russian life, just like the Jews died because they weren't "Aryan" enough. Why not focus on THAT, Sean?
Every time someone opens their mouth about someone being like Hitler, a shoe enters someone's mouth. When it should be striking their other end. Let me state this for clarity to all the history challenged out there. With the exceptions perhaps of Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, and Pol Pot, NO ONE was like Hitler in the last few centuries. And Tiglath-Pileser and Tamerlane excepted, damn few before that.
But dumbasses? THEM we have plenty of. Welcome to the club, Sean Spicer.
WOW! You pulled no punches, have made yourself very clear, AND have demonstrated that you are even-handed on this issue, Chris, as this blog entry demostrates. I now have a better understanding of from whence you come on Hitler comparisons.
ReplyDeleteDarn, I thought I was pretty clear before, lol...
DeleteChris:
ReplyDeleteYou and I are of the SAME mindset here...I was talking with Wifey about this very topic the other day.
While we have had (and still have) all these dictators (throughout history), they are all "unique" in their own brand of EVIL.
And, you're correct on ALL accounts.
---"Many people forget that the first nation the Nazis invaded was THEIR OWN"
(Doctor Abraham Erskine - Captain America The First Avenger)
And yes, they KILLED their own people along the way...many by poison gas (when these Germans were sent to the death camps because they were Jews)
Amazing how art imitates (and instructs us about) life sometimes.
Well said.
Stay safe (and informed) up there, brother.
Like I told Laurie, these idiots think Hitler is some "bar" to measure a-holes in their attempts to become bigger a-holes. Hitler was more than that, and using him for your bar just elevates him to a level of humanity he doesn't deserve.
DeleteI cringe for him sometimes. I think he is in over his head!
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly he's got a rough job- he can ill afford to make it worse on his own.
DeleteCW-I agree that comparisons to Hitler and Nazis happen all too frequently.
ReplyDeleteEven the Nazis of today are not like Nazis, and I am not sure anyone can compare to Hitler-a man of certain genius but pretty much evil to the core (although I read once that he was kind to animals).
Sadly, dumbf@#kery is something we have produced in abundance these days...
LC
Abundance is a kind word for it...
DeleteI wonder if he realised what a dumbass he was when he was saying those words
ReplyDeleteHard to tell if a dumbass realizes things like that. Like, if a tree falls in the forest..
DeleteI think it's time for him to step away from the podium. I understand a when someone makes a mistake with word or two, but this, this is more than just a blunder. It's horrendous.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not good on his feet thinking, was it?
DeleteApplause, applause! Well said.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI had no problem with what Sean Spicer said and to me as usual it was the media that was the real problem. This was another example of the media folks creating an imaginary story out of essentially nothing.
ReplyDeleteI admire Sean Spicer and I think he does a fine job. Certainly better than dumbass Obama Jr. Josh Earnest.

Tossing It Out: It's About Time
The problem lie in that he SHOULD have known the shitstorm that would come from it. When you're the head PR guy, you need to be swifter than that.
