Today, we land in May 18th, 1965- two days after my third birthday. and the day Cities Petroleum Services...
...became Citgo!
Through a spokesman, the Oklahoma-based oil producer (later acquired as a subsidiary of PetrĂ³leos de Venezuela) announced that "The distance from which the new CITGO emblem and color scheme can be seen is twice that of the previous green and white Cities Service signs and stations." Stanley D. Breitweiser went onto say that the name had been chosen from "more than 80,000 possible choices" generated by a computer programmed to create new five-letter words that began with "C", and that the logo, colors and name had been developed with the assistance of the design firm of Lippincott and Marguiles, and explained that "Its first portion, CIT, is derived from Cities Service. GO implies the company's power, energy and progressive nature."
You needed a computer program to come up with Citgo? Wow, Exxon must have fasted for forty days to get their name...

Anyway, we have a lot of stuff this week, including those dreaded words on the M10- "The Old Order Changeth!" Plus a big feature, and the Beatles doing the Panel picks! Let's gas and go!
******************************************
That dreaded phrase indicates we have FOUR new M10 songs! The first act is quite familiar- they just had Light A Candle at the top a while back! Here's new Ducktails at #10....
*************************************
Okay, boys, let's get this done quick and easy, we have 23 contestants off 63 stations this week...
Ringo: Who's this bloke talkin' to?
George: Us, I believe...
Paul: Well, he'd best get a bit of a grip on his giblets...
John: "Grip on his giblets"? Please tell me you aren't trying to fit THAT into a tune...
Sorry, guys, bit stressed here. Please welcome the Fab Four to the Musical Tardis for a spin through the list of...
P: Yeah, we got it, let's move on. Let's have the list.
R: All righty! I get the first three. The Supremos were at #13 in the States with Back In My Arms Again...
Barbara Lewis gets a jump on things- a vote for Baby I'm Yours, when it's two weeks from a national debut...
Glen Yarborough of the Limeliters is at #14 with Baby The Rain Must Fall. Who wants to go...
J: Here, give me that rubbish, you simpleton. Sounds Orchestral- hmm, sounds orchestral, doesn't it? They are at #9 with Cast Your Fate To The Wind.
P: I rather fancied Shelby Flint on that one...
J: Does that EVEN matter, Paul? Gary Lewis and the Playboys were at #3 with Count Me In; and Elvis Presley...
"Yeah?" |
Now, WAIT a minute...
E: Here, move over, son. Wayne Fontana- inn't he that joker with the crazy hair- he and the Mindbenders have The Game Of Love at #7...
The Beach Boys are at #8 with Help Me Rhonda...
An' Patti Page is at #73, debuting, with Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. Here, fellas, I'll be in the buffet with Patti...
P: Owl roight, let me have a go. The Four Tops are at.. mmm... number 74 with I Can't Help Meself...
R, singing: Sugar pie, honey bunch..
P: Yes, that'll be good, Richard. The first of the list that was on the British charts this week- at #26- the Seekers with I'll Never Find Another You at #4.
And, I have the bloody Beau Brummels at #25 with Just A Little. George?
G; Yes, let me see... Good heavens, Cannibal and the Headhunters- ghastly name- with Land of 1,000 Dances at #49.
Then comes... what is this?
Oh, yeah. Cookie and the Cupcakes were on our list somehow with a vote for Mathlida- a song that charted at #47 in 1959!!!! Missed the memo winner this week.
You could have just whispered it in my ear...
NOT gonna happen.
Well, that means I get another song. So I have Herman's Hermits at # 1 with Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter...
J: Bunch of poseurs...
G: ...and the Byrds at #76 with Mr Tambourine Man. Ringo?
R: Why not? I 'ave Chad Allen and the Guess Who with Shakin' All Over at #50...
The 'Ermits again with Silhouettes at #5...
And We Ourselves with the Classic all time tune Ticket To Ride at #2. And now, the simpleton...
J: You do know you weren't our FIRST drummer, correct? Anyway, Ticket To Ride was also #2 back home this week. Ever had THAT happen before, mate?
I don't think so...
J: Anyway, then we have Peter and Gordon- outstanding chaps...
R: You'd think so...
J: AHEM, Peter and Gordon with True Love Ways, #4 in England, #23 here.
Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs with Woolly Bully at #10...
And lastly, The bleedin' Hermits again, with Wonderful World, not even on the charts yet in the States, and #11 in Britain. And that is it!
Well, thanks for popping in to do the list guys! So this week we had what started to be a romp- then two songs came literally out of nowhere to get back in the battle. So let me give you the top five to choose from- Crying In The Chapel, Ticket To Ride, Mrs Brown, Woolly Bully, and Help Me Rhonda.
J: I do hope Presley wins this week- it would be a dreary chore to do this twice in two weeks...
John, I couldn't agree more.

Debut #2 marks the return of an act that hasn't been on the M10 since November of 2015! With a tune from the new lp Goodbye Sunshine, Hello Nighttime, here's Family Of The Year at #8...
********************************************
Our 6D victim was Marvin Gaye's I'll Be Doggone at #11. This tune was co-written by Smokey Robinson, which got me to looking into his other comps- and let me tell you, it only added more accolades to a Hall of Famer. So this week, here are the songs written or co-written by Smokey that went top ten for OTHER artists:
11- Tracks Of My Tears, Johnny Rivers. Now this list is going by Billboard peak with ties broken by MusicVF points. Johnny had the highest charting hit of a song that's great no matter who does it- he hit #10 in '67. I'll still like Linda Ronstadt's cover the best, and Smokey's original second.
10- More Love, Kim Carnes. She did her cover of Smokey's original in 1980, also hitting #10.
9- You Beat Me To The Punch, Mary Wells. Several of these were songs he gave to others, and Mary had three of them. This one was a #9 in '62.
8- TIE, even with the MVF points! And they are both by Marvin Gaye- our 6D vic I'll Be Doggone, and Ain't That Peculiar, which both hit #8 in 1964-5.
6- Two Lovers, Mary Wells. This time, she hit #7 in 1962.
5- Ooh Baby Baby, Linda Ronstadt. Linda's tasty cover hit #7 in '78.
4- Get Ready, Rare Earth. My pick o' the littler, this pseudo-live smash hit #4 in '70.
3- Shop Around, Captain and Tennille. In the midst of their unbeatable streak, the dynamic duo took it to #4 in '76.
2- My Girl, Temptations. The top two both came out the same year (1964), both hit #1, both had a title with the same first word, and the same first letter to the second word. Which means the winner is...
...the gorgeous Mary Wells and My Guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
***************************************
Debut #3 is from an act that also hasn't been around in a while- he had one week at #10 back in April '16! The song at #7 is Cullen Omori...
*****************************************************
Stat Pack time!
I knew 41 this week. One of them was not the #65 in '65, Gene Pitney's Last Chance To Turn Around. But it is widely acclaimed to be one of his best, and I had to agree it was a great tune.
At #101- did somebody say Buck Owens? He was there with I Want No One But You.
Now for a little Roger Miller irony. See, while he topped the British chart with King Of The Road this week, he was also the big mover here, going 28 spots from #61 to #33 with Engine Engine # 9.
*********************************
And now, the remaining M10.
Not My Baby holds on for a 9th week, falling from #4 to 9 for Alvvays.
The Knocks have charted with five different vocalists on the M10- Matthew Kona on I Wish, Walk The Moon on Saving The Best For Last, Absofacto on Trouble, POWERS on Classic, and now Foster The People on Ride Or Die, which moves from 9 to 6.
Gilbert O'Sullivan charges up 5 to #5 with Where Did You Go To. You can already see the punch line when this one starts to drop, right?
Oh, I did say there was four debuts, right? The fourth comes in at #4- and it sets up back-to-backs for illuminati hotties...
And that means that Paying Off The Happiness descends from #1 to 3 this week.
Plus, with Eleanor Friedberger stalled at #2 with Make Me A Song, that means our new #1 belongs to...
...Caroline Rose and Jeannie Becomes A Mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And your Panel pick this week? If you took the Beach Boys, you only got 7.9%...
If you took Elvis, sorry, only got 11.1%...
If you took The Beatles or Sam the Sham, you hit the two "almost but not quites" at 19%...
But you got the win with 22.2% if you took...
...Herman's Hermits with Mrs Brown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Be back next time, God willing, for 1966!
1965 was an interesting year in music and for me, personally. We moved back to Germany that July. ☺ Most of these songs bring back a lot of memories. There's so much information to digest here. Of the three new videos, Cullen Omori held my interest the most. A lot of today's music seems so bland! Must be an age thing. LOL Speaking of age, Peter Noone looks pretty good for an old guy. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteChris:
ReplyDelete---Wow...YOU guys out here had CITIES SERVICE stations too? Sweet.
(sure miss THOSE days of REAL service stations).
---Well, computers were a LOT "dumber" in THOSE days (trust me).
---Ducktails - not bad. I could use it for dinner music.
---That was some pretty good Beatle-banter goin' on...heh.
---Family of the Year - EXCELLENT tune. great lyrics and harmonies. I honest-to-God LIKE that song...a LOT!
---Oh, yeah...Smokey was my musical hero for decades (still like those hits). Be nice to have MORE singers like that today.
---Mary Wells - ANOTHER class act from the past.
---Cullen Omori - Not a bad song.
---Had to listen to the Pitney song...been a LONG time...Still pretty catchy.
Nothing wrong with a song that tells a story.
---Roger Miller was underestimated by a lot of people...always found his songs worth a smile or two.
---Illuminati Hotties - LOVE her vocals, but the band is a little "too up front". Aside from that, a good song.
---Great to see Gilbert on the rise!
(I smell a #1 coming...I hope)
---Caroline Rose makes #! - nice.
---And I nailed it with Herman's Hermits (a personal favorite from back then, that I hadda run with)…!
Outstanding ride this week.
Keep those hits comin' up there, brother.
