Time Machine co-ordinates VICXVI5548958

Today, we go to August 9th, 1958.  This is the day Cliff Richard signed his first record deal with EMI!

20 days later, his first single, called Move It (originally the b side of Schoolboy Crush) would be released, and the rest is history.  It's all I got for today, but it beats Butch Vig's birthday in a 6 Degrees, amIrite?

Welcome to a much more normal Time Machine, wherein Elvis makes his fourth trip to the POTM podium, three new debuts on the M10, and oy, the trouble I had with the big mover this week!  So now that the lead-in is back on a diet, let's have at it!

So now I'm going to confuse everybody just for a moment and move us ahead- to September 15th, 1962. I was a day away from being 4 months old, and music around the world looked like this:  In both the UK and Australia, Frank Ifield's I Remember you was on top; Ray Charles' I Can't Stop Loving You was tops in Holland, Denmark, and Israel; in India, the #1 was Cliff's Shadows with Guitar Tango.  The Philippines and Hong Kong each had local versions of Al Di La.  And among the English songs on other charts, Paul Anka had A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine at #4 in Argentina and #3 in Spain; the Champs had their version of Limbo Rock at #6 in Japan- and Peru had a local version at #5.  Italy's highest English tune was the intriguingly named St Tropez Twist at #3; and Mexico, while it didn't have any English tunes, had local versions of Norman at 4 and Johnny Get Angry at 6.   And we care why?  Well, it will have something to do with the upcoming 6D song- sorta- but in the meantime, let's bop back to 1958....

C'mon, man, I wanna get to the Panel stuff!  And no more Hulk stuff!

I read ya, King, and I hope you will be the most unusual character we encounter on today's post.

Yeah, well, I bette- hey, waitaminit!

Chill, dude! You get 11 tunes from 23 stations- 8 one vote wonders and 3 finalists!  Ready?

Son, I was born ready!  Now lemme see the list...

The Everly Brothers lead off the losers with Devoted To You, debuting at #37.

Jimmy Clanton's Just A Dream comes in at #14...

The Elegants and Little Star are at #6....

The Purple People Eater by... hey?  Who the heck is Johnny "Scat" Brown"?

It's an Australian vote.  I couldn't even find it online!  But Sheb Wooley was #26 here...

Okay, okay.  Johnny Otis has Willie An' The Hand-Jive at #17...

Bobby Darin's goin' Splish Splash at #4....

The Pony Tails had Born Too Late at #22...

...an' Elvi- Hey, that's me!  I had King Creole at #34.

Nicely done- and without getting mad over just getting one vote!

Aw, what the heck, I get enough good press on this show.

I'm so proud of you!  Here's the finalists!

Okay, we have Ricky Nelson and Poor Little Fool at #2....

Domenico Modugno and Nel Blu Di Pinta Di Blu- aka Volare- at #3....

And this week's Cashbox #1, Perez Prado and Patricia!

Wow, I don't know if we've ever had a 1,2,3 final before!   Take your guesses, while we cue up M10 debut #1, at #10... it's LA's the Growlers...

******************************************

So what was the deal with the international charts of September 15, 1962?  Well, it contained the very first Irish chart!  And on that chart...

1- I Remember You, Frank Ifield
2- Speedy Gonzales, Pat Boone
3- Things, Bobby Darin
4- Picture Of You, Joe Brown
5- Follow That Dream, Elvis

See, I tol' you I get enough good press!

6- Adios Amigo, Jim Reeves

And at #7, Bobby Vinton's Roses Are Red.  And that tune, which Bobby rescued from a reject pile, was written by one Paul Evans, who scored his big songwriting credit with our 6D song- the Kalin Twins and When, at #5 without a Panel vote.

***********************************************

Yeesh, I better get these debuts in!  At #9, for the first time since July of '17- though with an older song off her 2014 debut, here's Springtime Carnivore....

**************************************************

Stat Pack time!

The hardest thing there was the biggest mover.   I kept finding another bigger mover after the one I wrote down, but  had a good reason.  You see, after several weeks of big movers that never cleared 19 places moved, I had SEVEN that moved 20 or more this week:

Bobby Freeman's Betty Lou Got A New Pair Of Shoes and Nel Blu Di Pinta Di Blu, 20 spots
Perry Como's Beats A Heart So True and Connie Francis's Stupid Cupid, 23
Bobby Darin's Early In The Morning, 25
Jimmie Rodgers' Are You Really Mine, 26

But the winner, moving 34 from #68 to 34-

Yeah, it's me!

...Elvis and King Creole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

************************************************

Also, our #58 in '58 belonged to Tony and Joe.  Who?  Well, Joe Saraceno (best known for producing The Ventures) and Tony Savonne (who's real name was-huh?- Henry Imel), who got together to do a Bandstand inspired dance number called The Freeze.  Just another BTW- It was Joe who changed an unknown band's name from the Pendletones- to the Beach Boys...

The UK #1 this week was All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everlys; they also picked off two of the big debuts, with Devoted To You at 37 and Bird Dog at 32.  The other big debut was Eddie Cochrane's Summertime Blues.  And out of the 16 songs I knew on the list prior to Time Machine, I'd say that the Elegants and Little Star would have been my #1.

**********************************************

One more M10 debut- and here's the return to the M10 of Mikaela Davis:

**************************************************

And the rest of the M10:

Starcrawler moves up 2 to #7 with Hollywood Ending.

Slipping a spot to #6, Beach Bunny and Prom Queen.

Booming up 5 to #5, Geowulf and He's 31.

Falling from the top to #4, King Leg and Running Scared.

Holding at 3, Silversun Pickups and Simpatico.

And in a battle that almost brought me to a coin flip, the Orwells climb 2 to #2 with Last Days In August.

And the top?

M.A.G.S. and Drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And our winner of the Panel, with seven votes to 4 for each of the other two....

....Ricky Nelson and Poor Little Fool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next time, 1959!

  1. Phew! Lots of familiar songs!

Ricky Nelson was my teenage idol. He appeared at what seemed to be a real come down for him, at warehouse place at an empty fairground. We went to see him, since tickets were cheap for us. It was a good concert, he still had it. When he died tragically, life seemed unfair.

And I was two days away from being a month old.
