Sunday message: George Floyd

This may seem an odd spot to voice my thoughts on this subject- and hopefully I'll still have a home tomorrow when it posts- But here we go.

George Floyd was a criminal, righteously arrested.

The police who arrested him, however, were a lynch mob.  Not uncommon in Minneapolis.  Have we so soon forgot about how officer Mohammed Noor shot through the drivers side door of the cop car he was in, OVER his partner's lap, and killed a woman- actually the person who called them to the scene- in her pajamas, not three years ago.

Justine Diamond's death should have started a sweeping out of the bad apples in the MPD.  That it didn't is testified to by the fact that the four cops who lynched George Floyd all had records that should have seen them in alternate employment years ago- especially the one who put his knee on the man's neck.

The coroner says it wasn't what the cop did, but Floyd's "underlying medical conditions" that killed him.  No, it was the knee on the neck that did it, because if it hadn't been there, his underlying conditions wouldn't have killed him at that moment.

So now the 'protesters' come out, and once again show their intelligence and true motives by destroying anything in their paths, whether these cops, these stores, these reporters, had anything to do with it or not.  They think "it's the only way they'll listen to us"- those that do think- but the only ones listening to actions like these are the racists who are sitting at home, using the video of this 'message' to help groom little racists that may one day become the next generation of police.

Yeah, there are people listening to the looting, the burning.  And what they hear is, "We're a bunch of Satan-driven animals, nothing more- nothing less".

And you know who all these people are- the rioters, the cops, the racists?  They are the ones we talked about last week when I pointed out what Jesus and Stephan both said- "Forgive them, Lord, they know not what they do."

Here's what WE need to take from all this garbage- forgiveness like this is a lot harder than it seems, a lot more than, "I forgive you, but I hope the National Guard runs your --- to prison".  It makes you really appreciate the courage of the people in the stories where the survivor of a murder victim forgives, even witnesses, to the killer.

God doesn't allow everyone to have to go through that example.  But what I am seeing is that He expects us ALL to try to achieve that level of forgiving in a situation like this one.  We are to pray, "Forgive them, Father"- and MEAN it- in hopes that maybe just ONE person in one of those crowds in one of these cities might be rescued by God.

It was so easy in the abstract last weekend, wasn't it?  This morning, it's here, real and hard as a rock.  Can you still do it?  Can I?

Time Machine co-ordinates VICXLVI62652974

Today we go out to the stadium on May 29th, 1974- Arlington Stadium, where the following incident set the Rangers and the visiting Indians- and the fans- to blows...

As you can see, It was problem child Lenny Randle who sparked it all, and featured a trip by Tribe catcher Dave Duncan into the stands.  5 days later, they were in Cleveland when 10 cent beer night sparked fan attacks on OF Jeff Burroughs and an ump, who awarded a forfeit to the visiting Rangers.  10 cent beer almost anywhere isn't a real bright idea, so we'll file this with other great 1970's baseball bad ideas like free agency and Disco Demolition Night.

Welcome to Time Machine, where there won't be 10 cent beer- although I am drinking a free one as I type!  This week, I remembered the 6D, and we'll have that along with a Thumbs segment and a new definition of M10 superstar- and why it matters this week in particular.  Plus, Edgar Winter!  It will be a real hit!

**********************************************************************

Let's start out with that 'new definition' I was talking about.  Let's just say, I set an arbitrary number of M10 hits an act has to get to attain 'superstar status.'  Let's say we make it 7- you need seven M10 chart hits to be an M10 superstar.  How many acts would make the cut?

Well, that would bring in Alvvays.  And Beach House.  And Agnes Obel.  And that would be it...

...until this week, when not one, but TWO acts debut their seventh M10 hit!  And the first one, at #10, is the Jayhawks...

****************************************************

Hello, Mr Winter, so glad to meet you!

You can call me Edgar, bud.

Thank you.  So in perusing your bio, I see three things that really impressed me- first is the sheer amount of talent who has played in your bands...

Yeah, I love working with the best.  Derringer, Montrose, Dan Hartman...

The second was the fact that, basically, if it can be played, you can play it! Organ, ARP 2600 synthesizer, piano, clavinet, marimba, mellotron, saxophone, timbales...

Yes, I've been known for that shoulder-strap keyboard thing and guitar, but I've also done a lot of sax work....David Lee Roth, Meat Loaf, Tina Turner...

But the best part is how you aren't afraid to explore every style out there.

Part of what my career has been about is trying to broaden musical horizons and awareness and to try to break down what I consider to be musical prejudices that exist between different forms of music. I love all forms of music. I see no reason why people who appreciate classical can’t like rock, or why people who like jazz can’t get along with country. *

(*From a 2014 interview with Barbara Flaska on PopMatters)

Hey, wait- I'm going to say that in the future?  That's pretty good, I better write that down!

Nardole!  The perception filter's down again!  Anyway, so this week we had a mere fifteen contestants who got 51 votes.  Unfortunately for challenge's sake, the winner was two votes away from lapping the field, so what I like to do in that case is something other than make you go, "Gee, I bet it will be whatever was #1 on Cashbox this week".

Even though it IS what's #1 on Cashbox this week.

Precisely.  So what I'll have you do is give the top 5, in alphabetical order by singer- and then have everyone try to guess which one was the #1 song, and thus the next POTM!

Sounds fair.  Let's see the list.  Hey, you don't have them in order!

I just came up with the idea...

Well, never let it be said that Edgar Winter can't alphabetize a list!  Hmmm...

Marvin Hamlisch, The Entertainer...
Jackson Five, Dancing Machine...
Maria Muldaur, Midnight At The Oasis...
Ray Stevens, The Streak...
...and Wings, Band On The Run!

This week's top five, which pulled in 34 of the 51 votes- all but 10 by the #1 song of the week!  So put em in order, write em down, and see if you can get the list right!  Meanwhile....

*************************************************************

You might be familiar with the name of former backup singer, former groupie, and former drug dealer, Cathy Smith.  She was the one who served time for famously admitting to injecting John Belushi with the drug mix that ended his life.  Maybe you didn't know that she also had another claim to fame- she was the "hard-lovin'" inspiration- supposedly- for Gordon Lightfoot's song Sundown.  She dated Gordon on either side of carrying on with The Band and it's several members.  But before we toddle off with her, let's get back to Sundown.  The lp of the same name had several tracks where percussion and congas were played by one Milt Holland- a legendary performer who is a story all his own.  But for the purposes of today's story, he was one of the inspirations behind Jeff Porcaro's  iconic drum line in the song Africa by his band Toto.  Also playing on that #1 single was one James Pankow- the longtime trombonist for Chicago, and the co-writer on the highest song this week without a Panel vote- the #8 I've Been Searching So Long.

************************************************************

This week, another act also scores their 7th M10 hit- and it comes in at #8.  Here are The Shacks...

I discovered along the way an interesting tidbit- the song was originally done by Sunny Ozuna of Sunny and the Sunglows, a Chicano band who had a top 20 hit in 1963 with Talk To Me.

*************************************************

I almost missed the cover of the week here- it was by a band called Wednesday, who had also cover J Frank Wilson's Last Kiss.  This time, they took a shot at rock classic Teen Angel- and here's what we thought.

Laurie- Just judging on the music and not comparing to the original, I liked it!
Chris- I loved the music, BUT... switching genders, and "...teen angel, can you hear US..."  just rubbed me wrong.

In the mean time, the stat pack says...

Big mover- Cher, Train of Thought, 21 spots from 75- 54.

Charts across the English speaking world- at #1...
Australia- Suzy Quatro, Devil Gate Drive...
Canada- "finalist" The Entertainer...
South Africa- Dobie Gray, Loving Arms...
The Laurenco Marques song of the week, Hot Chocolate's Emma, which wouldn't reach the States until next year...
...and in the UK, the Rubettes with Sugar Baby Love.  The Rubettes did hit here, and they and Dobie Gray are worth a listen for the curious.

*******************************************

The remaining M10...

Maybird edges up one to #9 with Fried Dead Moth...
Alkonost holds at 7 with Where The Winds Live...
The country entrants flip spots- Jana Kramer down to 6 with Untouchable, and falling former #1 I Don't Need To Know back up a spot to 5 for Maddie and Tae.
The Stones fall back a pair to #4 with Living In A Ghost Town... Likewise last week's #1, Deradoorian's Monk's Robes, to 3.
Sass Jordan up 2 to #2 with High Road Easy... which leaves the new number one...

...The Pretenders and You Can't Hurt A Fool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, for that top five:

At #5, with 3.9%, Midnight At The Oasis...

At #4, the vote runner up with 7.8%, Band On The Run...

At #3, one of 2 songs with  5.88%, Dancing Machine...

At #2, with a single vote for 1.9%, The Entertainer....

And the #1 and next week's POTM, with 47.05%....

Ray Stevens and The Streak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So be prepared next week, with me and Ray, even with clothes on, things could get ugly!

Wednesday Bible Study- the end of all things- Habakkuk

The third chapter of Habakkuk (which we hit also in the 3:16s) reads as a Psalm, with notations as to instruments needed and the 'selah' pauses, as good an indication as any that Habakkuk was a 'professional' prophet.  But this was no mere psalm- it was an end-of-days prophecy, combined with what the events meant to HIM, even though he lived thousands of years before US, and we haven't got to those days yet.  And it's in his application that we take our greatest meaning from it.

From the beginning to the first 'selah', we get a simple message.  That Habbie heard the report- that is, he received the prophecy, and it starts with God- as the returned Christ- touching down on earth in His Glory.

The next section talks of the effects of that landing- landmarks of the earth thought to be 'eternal' crumbling before His approach.  3:6 basically tells you the answer to the age-old question- the irresistible force or the immovable object-  it's the force:   His were the everlasting ways. But the section goes on asking, did God come down just to change the real estate?

Hab 3:8  Was your wrath against the rivers, O LORD? Was your anger against the rivers, or your indignation against the sea, when you rode on your horses, on your chariot of salvation?
Hab 3:9  You stripped the sheath from your bow, calling for many arrows. Selah

No, the purpose, revealed right at the pause, is war.  The next section tells of the purpose of the war:

Hab 3:13  You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, laying him bare from thigh to neck. Selah

But before we get there is an interesting phrase which then leads into the next section:

Hab 3:11  The sun and moon stood still in their place at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.

His weapons so awesome that even the heavens stopped to watch.  But those He attacked weren't even worthy of them:

Hab 3:14  You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors, who came like a whirlwind to scatter me, rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
Hab 3:15  You trampled the sea with your horses, the surging of mighty waters.

While God's presence wracked the earth itself, it was man's own weaponry- whether this is literal, or figurative of his weapons of sin, you decide- that destroyed him.  Then comes the verse we studied so long ago:

Hab 3:16  I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound; rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us.

That study, from nearly two years ago (which I didn't realize I had been doing these so long!) can be found here.  And at this point the prophecy ends, and the application begins.  Speak on, Habakkuk:

Hab 3:17  Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls,
Hab 3:18  yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
Hab 3:19  GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.

A good lesson for these days- no matter what the trouble, rejoice in the Lord!  Those who are faithful are NOT abandoned.

Martin World News- anti-virus edition

Are you sick of COVID news?  Me too!  So I looked up places (nations only, sorry, Puerto Rico) that according to WHO had ZERO deaths so far.  There were 21, with a total of 1,685 confirmed cases between them- 414 more than my home of Allen County, IN (with 66 fewer deaths).  So I decided to draw a random list (using a random number generator) of 10 of these nations, and see what's doing there.  Feel free to doubt the numbers if you like- I know I have my doubts about #s 8 and 10...

Mozambique

Well, they may be self-disqualifying, as on May 19th they reported an asymptomatic infected gentleman was brought to the hospital.  Self-quarantining at home after being diagnosed on the 15th, he was rushed to the hospital already unconscious and was pronounced dead minutes later.  It appears to be building up a powerful punch there.

Cambodia

The Dany Deng pig importing concern is asking to get it's licence back, but I'm kinda wondering if it's gonna happen.  They have been busted for violations like putting more pigs in their trucks than allowed and not having the proper health certifications.  The Ag Ministry there said, “On April 21, it promised to not make any more mistakes. But on May 5, the company made the same mistake. Therefore, the ministry had to cancel its licence.”  And that same mistake?  20 pigs more on a truck than allowed (also known as the 5,700 lb mistake) and "fraudulent" health paperwork.  Khov Heng, owner of Dany Deng, blames it on his provincial branch, who apparently can't tell when they've overshot the pig count by 2 1/2 tons.

St Vincent and the Grenadines

I had to look into the headline of police starring in what was called a "Passing-out Parade".  Was this a parade meant to see who would succumb to the heat first, or an after-graduation "morning after the party" hangover deal?

As it turns, I was closer with my second whimsical guess, as it was the 'passing out' of police academy by this year's graduates.  I certainly hope that it didn't involved my speculated over-indulging, as they are required to wear face masks and (thankfully) social distance, and I sure wouldn't want to barf wearing one...

Eritrea

They celebrated their 29th anniversary as a nation on the 23rd, and were more than happy to explain how they managed to do this without a single death so far...

Eritrea’s approach has manifestly shown that it is possible to do a lot of good work if you count on your people and positively lead the way forward. This people’s approach has paid handsomely by enabling the country to arrest the spread of the virus with zero deaths and full recovery of all infected patients, albeit temporarily as the war continues.

Trust is critical in every government undertaking. And the Eritrean people have responded spectacularly because they believe in their common good and trust their government.

Somehow, I'm persuaded I need to add #4 to my 'skeptical' list...

Papua-New Guinea

Here, we have an "energy crisis", sort of.  Former Prime Minister Peter O'Neill was arrested on the 20th, and it took me a bit to sort out the story.  While he was PM, apparently he went to the National Bank to request 50 million kina ($14.3 million) to use to purchase two generators from an 'LR Company' to combat the high incidences of blackouts in certain cities.  The Bank approved, PNG Power said thank you, and everyone was happy- almost.  As it turned, the 50M k was paid to an Israeli outfit (who actually made the generators), and when people began asking why proper procedures hadn't been followed (and why there was no contract FOR the generators, he then went to the executive council claiming he needed K 94M  ($26.9 million)- apparently netting himself and his friends at LR a tidy $12 and a half million profit.

Mongolia

Here's a place actively looking to prevent corruption, by taking away opportunity in Constitutional amendments:

The issue on double deel (holding dual posts in Cabinet and Parliament) was decided by the new amendment to the Constitution. In addition to the prime minister, only four members of Cabinet will be allowed to hold dual posts (in Parliament and Cabinet). However, the amendment will not come into force starting today, according to officials.

The amendment also restricts lawmakers’ direct access to laws that underlie the country's economy, such as the budget and taxes.

Can you hear Washington DC screaming, "HERESY!!!"?

Dominica

The Island's Health Minister, Dr Irving McIntyre, had something to say that a good deal of the USA population (Notably conspiracy mavens and Wal-Mart shoppers) should pay heed to:

“We must not lose focus and become complacent,” he said.  “We are aware of the fact that approximately one-third of cases may be asymptomatic but fully capable of spreading the virus.”

The health minister said it was noticeable over the last few weeks that many people have let down their guard “and this is surely not in our best interest.”

“Some restrictions were relaxed to cater to our mental health and physical activities and not to imply that we are COVID free,” McIntyre pointed out. “We must remember that Covid-19 is spread by a respiratory virus and for this reason, I encourage you to continue wearing your masks and practicing physical distancing.”

Dr. McIntyre said he believes that this is the best way of showing a public spirit of concern for our families, friends, loved ones, the clinically vulnerable and elderly and the country as a whole.

Oh, but it's all "the GOP this, the Dems that".  Sure.

Bhutan

Wow, what a surprise.  In an interview with Forbes magazine,  Director General (DG) of the Tourism Council of Bhutan, Dorji Dhradhul was claimed to have said that Bhutan was ready right now to re-open for tourism.

Truth: “It was the headline of the story that looked like Bhutan will open up for tourism since there is zero Covid-19 death,” the DG said. “From the TCB’s side, this was definitely not our view expressed during the interview.”

According to the DG, based on the council’s assessment and the current situation Bhutan cannot be opened to tourism at least not before November. “Even if we open after November this year, tourism will still take time to pick up especially tourists visiting Bhutan,” he said.

He added tourists would have to go through certain norms like compulsory quarantine and requirement of physical distancing.

I can see zero tourists coming to Bhutan in 2020 even if we open unless a few high-end tourists decide to come,” he said. “If it opens in 2021, we might get 10,000 more tourists, which is less than what we used to get so far.”

Dorji Dhradhul said that tourist could be expected only by 2022, but we might receive only about 50 percent of what we see today and start receiving full tourists only by 2025.

Note to Forbes:  Howzabout trying "hear what they say, not what you want to hear?"

Rwanda

Literally, a story of being in hot water:

Twenty people were arrested on the evening of Saturday May 23 at the Lebanon Hotel in Remera, Gasabo District where they were found in a sauna and massage room.
Among those arrested are Raymond Bizwinayo, the hotel proprietor, Christopher Tuyishime, the Manager and Alexis Nyiridandi, who is in charge of the Sauna.

Bizwinayo distanced himself from the unlawful acts, arguing that the Sauna and massage services were under different management although they were operating within the same facility.

How do you 'distance yourself' when you are literally IN THE SAUNA???  Maybe he meant 'social distancing'...

And finally...

Sunday Message- they know not...

It's been a while since I've done one of these 'very early Saturday morning' Sunday messages, but once again I was hit by something I should have connected a long time ago.  A preacher I woke up to said, "Stephan prayed, "Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do", and one man there- Saul of Tarsus- was forgiven and went on the become Paul the Apostle."

And that made me connect it to the other time you hear this prayer- in Luke's gospel, as Jesus is insulted as He's hung upon the cross.  And there, out of those insulting Him, one man- who was hanging beside Him- was forgiven.  And this brought to mind many lessons.

First, this part about 'not knowing what they're doing'.  Jesus had preached throughout the area for 3 years- the chances that anyone there hadn't been exposed to His teaching at some level were minimal- more so for those who demanded His execution.  Stephen had just given an hours-long sermon to those who stoned him.  It wasn't so much they 'didn't know', but they didn't GET IT.  When we pray for all men, phrases like, "they do too know, they just don't care", and "They hate us too much to hear" should never enter into it.  There is a difference between knowing and KNOWING.

Second, it took that forgiveness FIRST before any of them changed their ways.  Like Jesus said in Matthew 5:

46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

And perfect means you forgive FIRST.  Anyone can accept an apology.

Third, how staggering the lessons from those who are forgiven!  The thief on the Cross teaches us it is NEVER too late to come for forgiveness, and that the 'payoff' is not this life.  Paul teaches us no cause is too lost, no sin too heinous to be forgiven- no life so failed that it can't be used.

Wisdom isn't something that you get from reading and memorizing the Bible.  It comes when you let God start making the connections.  And thanking Him, as I do, for not only making the connections, but allowing me to share them.

Time Machine co-ordinates VICXLV62552273

It's May 22nd, 1973, and today we meet one Anthony Lambdon.  He was an English MP- as well as a Defense Under-Secretary- and when his father passed, he was to be Earl of Durham.  However, he would have to resign his seat to take the peerage, so he disclaimed it.  And yet, he still requested to be known as Lord Lambdon, even though this was against the rules.  Also against the rules was this:

There's our hero, fast asleep beside call girl Norma Levy, whose hubby just happened to be around to snap the pic, which then found its way to popular tabloid News Of The World.  Today, our little lonely Lord resigns his posts after having to admit that while Ms Levy was the first working girl he'd been PHOTOGRAPHED with, she wasn't exactly his first time at the market.  So he left his wife, moved in with another girl (who just happened to be Rachel Ward's mommy), and kept on insisting everyone use the honorific, even if honor wasn't his strong suit.

**********************************

And with that fun out of the way, let's move on to the music of Time Machine.  Sorry to say but, let's face it, sometimes you just aren't up for doing a bit, and this week I just don't know enough about the members of the Chi-Lites to do them justice- or even damage- so I think I'll let the guys handle the Panel.  I'm sure Bellbottom will have something to say about that, but...

HB:  Actually, we had received a 'cease and desist this week from the last survivor of the group, Marshall Thompson, so...

That's too bad!  I loved his story about getting his first gig by dressing up like the band, joining them at a local soda fountain between sets, and then freezing up when he got hired...

HB:  He specifically asked not to mention that...

Fine, just edit the tape to say Eugene Record did that.  Nobody believes the stuff we come up with here anyway, so...

HB:  I should say not!  Especially when you take a legitimate historical figure, change his last name to that of a pair of out-of-style slacks, and try to pass him off...

Out of style?  Have you looked in the mirror lately?

Why, the haircut alone...

HB:  I was found quite distinguished by the ladies back in the day.  Why, I...

EP:  Hey, HB, was that dee-stinguished or EX-tinguished?

HB:  You listen here, you young noisemaker, I had 11 children- how many did you have?

EP:  You mean, that I know about?  Besides with, that was the real guy, not you.  You are an antiquated, archaic, modified fictional character.  Just like Me an' Noodle...

Nardole:  That's Nardole, sir.  N-A-R-...

EP:  Why, Wayne over here would kick Chris's butt if he were real...

WN:  Wait, 'If he were real'...

Everybody wait, we've blown 33 lines of type, not counting spaces, without even getting to the music!  Nardole, give us the rundown on this week's Panel!

N:  21 contestants from 64 stations, including a reasonably tight six way final...

Elvis, hit the oddities!

EP:  Takin' charge, big guy!  So we had that pesty little Maureen McGovern- who I think we finally got out of the boat- getting one with her The Morning After, which those nuts in Laurenco Marques had at the top although it wouldn't hit here till mid June...

An' with ELO on the charts with Roll Over Beethoven, it gave us a chuckle that Jeff Lynne's old partner Roy Wood, who left the band after the first album to form Wizzard-, had the number one in the UK with See My Baby Jive- which had a b-side called Bend Over Beethoven! Guess that wasn't a happy divorce!

Wayne, what was the big mover?

WN:  Well at first we thought Charlie Rich got it with Behind Closed Doors, with a 24 spot jump, but then we saw we missed George Harrison's Give Me Love, up 26 from 78 to 52.

Bellbottom, cue up the music, maestro!

HB:  Sigh, very well.  We have one debut on the M10 this week, at #10.  A band with 2 #1s to their credit, this is Maybird...

*****************************************

All right guys, lets have the finalists this week!

EP:  On it's way down, way down, now, Little Willie by Sweet at #26...

WN: The #1 this week, Stevie Wonder with You Are The Sunshine Of My Life...

HB:  At #3, Dawn featuring Tony Orlando...

EP:  Hey, dija here Tony O got hisself kidnapped?

HB:  Good heavens?  What happened?

Elvis, do NOT tell that dirty joke!

EP:  Er, sorry, boss...

HB:  Joke, indeed.  Anyway, their hit at #3 was Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree...

N: The Edgar Winters Group had the instrumental Frankenstein at #2...

EP:  An' lastly, McCartney and Wings with My Love at #5!

So, that group had a low of 6 votes and a high of 12, so be careful picking!  Moving on...

***************************************************

Nardole, where's my 6D on War's The Cisco Kid, at #6 without any Panel votes?

N:  You didn't do one, sir.

I did too!  What the heck?

N:  Do you remember writing anything?

Of course I do!  It started with... and then... crap, I didn't do one, did I!  What a lousy week this has been.  Wait, here's... no, that's my new thing of listing the other English speaking charts #1s.  Which, btw, had Australia with Tie A Yellow Ribbon, Canada with Cisco Kid, and South Africa had Cat Stevens with Can't Keep It In.

So, Bellbottom, do the thumbs segment!

HB:  This week, the Siskel and Ebert of music...

...went back to the original purpose of this segment- to listen to covers of popular songs by not so traditional artists.  This week, we started out with 3 Dog Night's hit Shambala- which debuted this week at #66- done by BW Stephenson which also debuted at #95:

Laurie:  Sideways.  It wasn't horrible, the original was better.
Chris:  Down.  The intro was nice, the vocal was okay, but he lost me when he sang "SHAM-ba-la" instead of SHAHM-ba-la".

The second song was Clarence Carter doing the Ernie K Doe hit Mother-In-Law.  It was charting at #123.

Laurie: Up.  Doable... not a fan of the song really.
Chris:  Up:  Love that little 'heh-heh-heh' Clarence throws in.

Finally, the last on is an original to a song covered much more famously later- Cum On Feel The Noize (they really could have used a good boarding school education!) by England's Slade.

Laurie:  Down.  There's something off about it.
Chris:  Yeah, it kinda lays there next to Quiet Riot's.  I'll give it a sideways.

************************************************
