Time Machine co-ordinates VICLXXX6755770

So here we go to May 7th, 1970, and I've already screwed up more stuff just trying to get the stupid co-ordinates right (for the first time since March, as it turns) than I do in a normal post!  Let me see what happened that day and maybe we'll find a clue about my pressing imbecility:

Hmmm... this date, the FCC announced that starting in September, networks would have to let the local stations have the show until 8 PM, instead of 730 or earlier, thus making the world safe for Alex Trebek...

"Except that I was doing radio classical music in Canada in 1970..."

Say, Alex, since you're here, and you obviously meet the requirements to be on this show, how about you be the guest host this week with me?  Just don't let on to the lawyer...

Why not?  I like all kinds of music!

Oh, and if you run into John Cowsill, you might not want to mention this....

Of course... this isn't illegal, is it?

Well, I suppose if you get technical... but I do issue the disclaimer most weeks that we're all imaginary, so we should be good.

Fine.  So let's look at our board... we have a tight 7-song battle for the Panel pick... three new M10 debuts... A live 6D with one of the Beatles... and a first in the Overseas If You Please!  Chris, you select...

We'll take first debut for #10, please, Alex!

The answer is:  They hit just a few weeks back with the title track to their new Album, Typhoons...

Who is, Royal Blood...

***********************************************

So we had a 26 song- 81 station Panel this week, and it might have been the tightest race as far as multiple contestants involved ever! The winner had 8 votes, another had 7, 3 had 6, and 2 more had five!  If I really wanted to stretch things, another 7 had three or four votes, but lets keep it here.  Alex, they are the contestants that made the final, with their Cashbox chart positions for the week...

What are...

Let It Be by the Beatles at #4,
American Woman by my pick, fellow Canadians the Guess Who at #3,
Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel at #18,
Everything Is Beautiful by Ray Stevens at #23,
The Ides of March and Vehicle at #10,
Another one I'd vote for, fellow Canadians the Poppy Family with Which Way You Goin' Billy at #22,
And Norman Greenbaum with Spirit In The Sky at #1!

Wow, what a list!  Now, we'll take a break for another video, and when we come back, Horace Bellbottom with a live 6D!  That video comes to you courtesy of M10 Superstars, The Explorer's Club, with their latest at #9...

HB:  Well, I see once again we are trading light on legality and heavy on humiliation, so once again I am to do what is misnamed the "live" 6 degrees.  Let us see...

Ah.  So Roger McGuinn of the Byrds used a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar to make the signature sound of the band on songs like Eight Miles High- songs that led them to be called the masters of Jangle rock.  Jangle rock is a term still used, notably for our own M10 supergroup Alvvays.  However, in these more modern times, bands like Alvvays and fellow M10 supergroup Beach House are also termed Dream-pop.  Dream pop has been around for a long, long time, and one of the pioneers often cited by current bands as an influence is Phil Spector and his "Wall of Sound" productions.

One such production was the first million seller by a former member of my late clients, the Beatles.  And that would be our 6D 'victim'- John Lennon's Instant Karma (We All Shine On), at #5 without one of the 4 score Panel votes.

AT:  I notice you didn't put the song in the form of a question, Horace...

HB:  Sir, I am NOT a game player; I'm barely adept in THESE matters.  However, if you insist...

(ALARM GOES OFF)  AT:  That's the daily double!  Horace, you can bet up to... well, there's no money involved, but your answer will be in the category of, "Branching off from the 6 D", which we'll get to right after Chris gives us the third debut...

That's right, Alex, we have a magnificent third debut up at #7, and it's a voice you know well, or at least we do, since he's also at #8 with the former number one Blown Away!  At #7, Matthew Sweet...

****************************************

AT:  All right, Horace, here is your Daily Double clue from the category,  "Branching off from the 6 D".  They are the Martin Era 2.0 songs, charting on Cashbox's top 100,  listed as in the top 31 12-string guitar hits of all time by Guitar World....

HB:  Sigh... what are...

America, A Horse With No Name, #29...
Bob Dylan, Hurricane, #28...
The Hollies, Look Through Any Window, #25...
Supertramp, Give A Little Bit, #20...
David Bowie, Space Oddity, #19...
Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, #17...
Rod Stewart, Maggie May, #16...
Rolling Stones, As Tears Go By, #14...
The Byrds, Mr Tambourine Man, #13...
Boston, More Than A Feeling, #9...
The Byrds, Turn! Turn! Turn!,  #7...
Beatles, Ticket To Ride, #6...
Led Zeppelin, Over The Hills And Far Away, #3...
The Byrds, Eight Miles High, #2...
And the number one on the list...

... the Eagles and Hotel California!

AT:  That is correct! (Fake applause)  And before anybody asks, the requirement that it be a CHARTING hit left out Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven (#12), which was never released.  Also Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here (#4) for the same reason.

Nice Job, Guys!  And now, Alex, The feature that traditionally is the guest's part to do, besides the Panel...

AT:  What is, "Overseas If You Please, and the big mover..."

Correct!  The board is yours...

AT:  Well this week, we have a first for the feature- two different songs are on top of two country's charts!  The lone solo is for South Africa, who had the Tee Set and Ma Belle Ami, a song that peaked in the US in March.  Both the UK and Canada were topped by Spirit In The Sky; Australia and New Zealand both chose Let It Be.  And the week's big mover was a tasty instrumental by El Chicano called Viva Tirando, which moved up 22 spots, from 75 to 53.

Okay, that leaves us with the six M10 songs we haven't mentioned...

6- up 3 for Major Murphy and Attention;
5- down 2 for Maddie and Tae's Woman You Got;
4- Evanescence up 2 with Broken Pieces Shine;
3- The Overcoats with Tennis, up 3 with The Hardest Part;
2- same as last, Blackberry Smoke and Ain't The Same;
And also staying at #1 for a third week....

...Redspencer and Happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now, the Panel vote!

The 2 that got 6.1% were Simon and Garfunkel and the Poppys, sorry, Alex...
The three that got 7.4% were The Beatles, Ray Stevens, and Norman Greenbaum;
the runner up with 8.6% was the Guess Who, sorry again, Alex;

And the winner, with 9.8%, is....

...Jim Paterik and the Ides Of March with Vehicle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't pretend to know who or even if next week, just show up!  If the door ain't locked, the show's on!
