M10 show week #30

Okay, I found something I found amusing to share on this week's show- and mind you, I didn't make it up!

Elvis:  I hope this inn't anuther "Elvis's girlfriends" deal...

Oh, no sir, far from anything Elvis!  I also got two new debuts- one that squeezed a last week debut out, and one that pushed out one that was in the 10 by the same act!  So why don't we get to that first debut?

Okay, let me see the copy..."A song that came from Cannons' newest lp, which came out in March, has pushed their 2019 Fire For You out of the countdown!  At #8..."

****************************************************

So, whut's this thing ya found?

Well, it was another clickbait post, and it involved the New Arena website and writer Bethany Eichel. And her list was "The 25 Most Overrated Singers Of All Time".  Now mind you, I'm not saying I agree with any of it... except, of course, the #1 she chose.  I thought I would share the "top" 10 with you all, and maybe somebody out there can give some opinionation as well.  So here, with quotes as appropriate, are the first five...

Hey, I BEST not be on this list...

Don't worry, King, Bethany ain't THAT far off course...

#10- Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

"...   simply whiny and a bit too raspy."

#9- Miley Cyrus

"... crossing over into genres that don’t match her voice have put her mediocre vocal abilities on full display." There are genres that do?

#8- Chris Martin (Coldplay)

Hah, that's YOU!

There are about ten million "Chris Martin"s out there.  And for me to be overrated, I'd have to be rated in the first place...

True, true...

#7- Bob Dylan

"   Just because you’re unique, doesn’t mean you’re an exceptional vocalist.."

I won't argue that, but here's the thing- no one ever thought Dylan was great BECAUSE of his vocals...

Unlike me!

Yes, unlike you.  And Kurt Cobain, for that matter.  It was what they said to their generation...

An' just whut was that?

Er... 'Everybody must get stoned'?

#6- Taylor Swift

Country Taylor, I might disagree with.  Pop Taylor, bullseye.  And now, let's queue up the second debut.  With a song that my son KC has already named "my song for the summer", and from the "summer" section of their SZNZ lp, here's Weezer at #8...

***********************************************************

Hey, c'n I do the #1s this week?

Sure, we have the 4's and 5's this time around.

Okay, so the fours first.  1964 this week, the #1 was the Beach Boys and I Get Around... in 1974, it was Bo Donaldson an' the Heywoods an' Billy Don't Be A Hero... and in 1984 this week, it was Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark.

Not bad!  And now, the top 5 most overrated singers...

#5- Ed Sheeran

To be honest, I've listened to part of one of his songs and was not impressed.  I'd probably have to agree with Bethany, who says, "  Sheeran has some vocal ability, but let’s not kid ourselves here. He’s far from being someone you’ll look back on as a ‘voice’ of the decade."

#4- Madonna

As high as she's rated, it would be hard NOT to be, to some extent.  I don't necessarily think she should be up here with Sheeran.

#3- Justin Bieber

Again, I couldn't pick one of his songs out of a hat, but I find it funny on principle.

#2- Jennifer Lopez

Again, J-Lo isn't in my wheelhouse, but I have to say that having her walking that big ol' butt away from the camera at the end of that Goli Nutrition ad might not have been the best plan for Goli...

And at the top of the overrated pile... excuse me while I chuckle...

#1- Jim Morrison (the Doors)

" I don’t think he ever considered himself a good singer. This is a good thing because he wasn’t one."  Just remember, she said it.

But YOU laughed at it!

Not as loud as if she had john Lennon at the top...

Haw!  Now THAT one I c'n get behind!

Speaking of behind, as in, "We're running...", get those #1s done, and I'll do the rest of the M10!

Got it!  1965 this week the #1 wuz the Byrds an' Mr Tambourine Man... 1975 wuz Captain and Tenille an' Love Will Keep Us Together... an' 1985 wuz Phil Collins an' Sussudio.  Hey, what's a Sussudio?

According to Song Meanings+ Facts,it was a "meaningless word" that just came out while designing the song on his drum machine.  It fit so well, he never could find a suitable replacement and left it in.

Oh.  Okay...

And the rest of the M10:

9- and holding for Valerie June (whose last name is Hockett) and Fade Into You.

7- down one for Hazel English et al and All Dressed Up.

6- And this week, this officially becomes the ONLY active Billboard #1 to be on the M10- Harry Styles and As It Was, up 4.

5- What is looking like it will be my song of the summer, Sunflower Bean down 2 with In Flight.

4- Camera Obscura down 2 with their former #1, Making Money.

3- The Jayhawks climb one with Save It For A Rainy Day.

2- A song that is growing on me rapidly, Absofacto's Dissolve, up 3.

And holding on to the top spot....

...Built To Spill and Understood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you all next time!

When asked what the meaning of the word “Sussudio” was and if it meant anything to him, Collins said it was a meaningless word. According to him, he just made it up during the writing process of the song. He said the word just popped out of his mouth while playing with his drum machine. He further stated that the word perfectly matched the song, but he knew since it meant nothing, he had to find another word to replace it. But try as he could, he was unable to find any other suitable word to replace “Sussudio”. He therefore retained it.
