M10 show, week #51

 

Elvis:  So, ya thinkin' about decoratin' the place yet?

Thought.  And having thought- not acted yet.  Every year, it seems the bah-humbug eats a little deeper into the season.  Which is going to seem odd, because, not only do I have a Christmas themed special, but for only the second time in these 7-plus years I put an honest-to-Rudolph Christmas song on the countdown!  In fact, whilst I do a little note-keeping, why not play that tune?

Geez, I thought ya wuz NEVER comin' back!  What did ya find out?

 Well, I learned that in this day and age, there are a LOT of Christmas songs on the Hot 100!  We have 23 this year, as opposed to 19 last year, so I thought we'd arrange them  by how much they moved this year from last year this week.

Man, you can't just ever do it the easy way, can ya?

What's the fun in that?  So, we'll start with the ones not on the list yet this year, and work our way up...

The biggest loser so far is Paul Anka and Home For The Holidays- it was 46 last year, nowhere to be seen so far this year. Then comes Chuck Berry's Run Rudolph Run (40) and Andy Williams' Happy Holiday (30).

One song- and from here I'll just give you where they are this week and you do the math- is 9 spots lower, and that's Michael Buble's version of  It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas.  Oddly enough, Perry Como's version, which wasn't on last year at this time, is ten spots ahead at #19.

Two others dropped 6 spots from last to this- Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) to 23, and Der Bingle's White Christmas to 31.  One song sits in the same spot- Bobby Helm's Jingle Bell Rock at #5.  And before we work our way up, Buddy, give us debut #2!

Awright, at #9 is the next big hit for M10 superstars Lucius, with Muse...

Four songs climbed one spot from last year at this time to this week on Billboard's Hot 100- Gene Autry's Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer to 34; Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas, to 6; and of course the big 2, Brenda Lee's Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree (3) and Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You (2).   One climbed two spots- Andy Williams' It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (9).  And 2 songs climbed three from last year- The Ronettes' Sleigh Ride (16), and Jose Feliciano's Feliz Navidad (13).  Okay, King, let rip with that high debut!

Yessir!  On the M10 this week, the high debut at #8 is a familiar face on the M10 and the alt charts, where they sit this week at #25!  Here's White Reaper with Pages...

Next up, we had one that moved up 4 ( Dean Martin's Let It Snow x3 to 18), one 5 ( George Michael's Last Christmas to 10), and one 6 spots (Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song to 12).  Then, we had two songs that made double digit moves, and they are both of the more modern variety- Kelly Clarkson up 10 with Underneath The Tree (17), and Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me up 12 (24).   I should also mention that there were a pair of new songs on this years list, but they were both buried in the 90's, so we might revisit them NEXT year.  But that still leaves us 7 that are on this years list that were not on this week last year.  They are: The aforementioned Paul Anka version of It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (19); Nat King Cole and Deck The Halls (30); Frank Sinatra and Jingle Bells (31); Gene Autry with Here Comes Santa Claus (39); Thurl Ravenscroft with You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch (42); The Jackson 5 with Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (49)...

Yeah?  Yeah?
