Okay, so this week we're going to do a "LIVE" Chris's top five!
How the devil ya gonna do that?
Just watch! We go to the chart for this week in 1979.... drop down to #40... and look for the songs I like that are going UP this week!
Oh, gotcha. Got a couple nice ones early on...
The trick is not to go for the just 'nice ones', but the ones that really hit for me. Ah, there's one that I had the single to... it was a #1 on the original M10 all those years ago... at 26, up one, Tycoon and Such A Woman...
I think I heard ya play that'n once...
It peaked this week here, and apparently peeked in at the Australian chart, copping a #99. Next... oh, there's one I liked...
Anuther one move up? Takin' some risks here...
Yeah but it was #1 on R&B- Instant Funk's I Got My Mind Made Up, up one to #22. Billboard peaked it at #20... doesn't appear to have gone beyond the USA. Wait, wait, there- #16 in Canada. Oh, we better get a debut in- we have 2 of 'em! Maestro, if you would...
Oh, I'm maestro now, huh? Okay, let me get my baton... swish swish...
Could we move past the clowning?
Yeah, yeah. Number nine, more Amira Elfeky...
************************************************
So why do they call videos like that 'visualizers'?
So you have something to look at while you listen, duh! Back to the list... Oh, there's our likely #1, there at #18... England Dan and John Ford Coley's Love Is The Answer- up 2 spots, if that'll make you happy. It made 79 in Australia... No word on Canada, though. Oh, hey, maybe this one... up 10 to #15- BeeGees, Love You Inside-Out. I know that was #1 all around- well except apparently on Cashbox, which peaked it at 2. BB and Canada had it #1, and Austral...ia had it at 77? I really would have thought they were bigger there than that.
Ya still need one more...
I know, let me see what I missed... In the meantime, play that other debut!
Yessir! This is off a 'tribute to the Talking Heads' album, and her first hit on the M10! This is a chick named Lorde...at #8.
Thank you kind sir! Okay, so I think I have my fifth song... I have to bend the rules a bit, but I have a very good reason. Before I hit that, though, I better give this week's official #1s from 1979! In Canada, my holdout #5 just stepped off the podium for Amii Stewart's Knock On Wood. Not a big fan myself, it was also a #1 here (a couple weeks ago), and was a #2 in Australia. In Australia, it was a band called Racey, who had an M10 hit with a song that hit the top just weeks later called Some Girls- but first, they spent the entire months of May and June at the top with Lay Your Love On Me. It didn't appear to make it to North America, but was also #1 in New Zealand and the Netherlands.
Have ta lissen ta that one later...
Why not now? Cue it up...
Cue it up, he says... act like I'm a grunt an' not a star...
Nice... not as good as Some Girls, but Laurie never liked that one much, so probably we're just as good off. Anyway, as to my top 5...
Let's put Instant Funk at 5... at #4, a song that really grew stronger the more I heard it, a #1 in North America, a #12 in Australia, the Doobie Brothers and What A Fool Believes. It was at 4 on the way down, but like I said, it hung stronger as it went longer. I'm gonna guess of that this week, the BeeGees knock Tycoon off the top spot, with ED & JFC waiting to push past them the next week. And now, big buddy...
Sound off the rest of the M10!
Oh, so now I'm just a copy reader... anyway...
10- Broken Bells from 7 with The Mall And Misery.
7- Lake Street Dive with Good Together from 10.
6- Suki Waterhouse and Every Day, etc etc...
"Etc, etc"?
Any song with more than six words in the title, and more'n 5 weeks on the chart, I'm claiming the option to 'etc, etc'! Six words, but one's a contraction, and seven weeks. Nyah!
5- Digging In The Dirt, Crow and Gabriel, down one.
4- Up 4, Real Estate an' Somebody New...
I hear thunder! Finish up while I get doggie a bathroom trip!
Oh, yeah, let me stay around all this electrical junk and get hit by lightnin'! Anyway...
3- Down one fer Cardinal an' Kacey Musgraves...
2- Up one fer Always (All The Time) by Bethany Cosentino, and, er, Bob Jr...
An' still the champeen for 3 weeks...
...whole lotta mama Shannon And The Clams, an' Real Or Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done, my good man! And not one complaint about no food!
I used to have a singing mechanical fish who sang "Take Me To The River". ☺ Interesting cover by Lorde. Not familiar at all with Racey. Don't think I missed much, to be honest. Sorry, not my taste.
Out of these my favourite would be Racey, I really liked that song Lay your love on me when I was much younger, and I still like it now
ReplyDeleteHave to say I liked Some Girls better, but that's why we don't all have the same top tens, eh?

ReplyDeleteYeah, that one must require a southern hemispheric constitution. You might like Some Girls better.
