Yeah, this was a bad week, and my back wasn't up to sitting down long enough to figure out an M10... and right now, I'm going down the list, and thanks to giving Misty a walk which aggravated things (but since it was going to rain in the morning...)

At any rate, I am only 10 or so songs down a 35 song shuffle, and I'm not at all convinced my back is gonna hold up long enough to get this done.  So I'm gamely going to try to do everything else... and maybe...

Okay, so we are targeting our birth year of 1962 this week- and to no great surprise, the #1 song this week is...

...the Monster Mash, in it's original run!  Having just knocked- the sacrilege of it!  -Sherry by the Four Seasons from the top, it also topped the Canadian charts this time around, but was only a #27 in Australia.  Let me take a look around and see what our big movers for the week, while illuminatti hotties play Sleeping In in my background...

5- Limbo Rock, Chubby Checker.  Moving 10 to #26 this week, it was #1 on Cashbox, 7 in Canada and 8 in Australia.

4- Sue Thompson's novelty hit James (Hold The Ladder Steady).  Up 11 to #39, it would fade out at 22 here, 16 in Canada- but top tenned in Australia at #6!

3- Gina, Johnny Mathis.  I didn't know this, so I'm listening now, very pretty!  Up 12 to #18, it would #8 here, #76 in Australia, 25 in Canada.

2-I Was Such A Fool (To Fall In Love With You), Connie Francis. Another unknown for me, it died off at 18 here, 32 in Canada, and MIA in Australia.

And top mover- up 26 big to #21:

...Neil Sedaka and Right Next Door To An Angel!  Quite to my shock, CB only took it to 10 (Billboard to #5), Canada had it at 5, and Australia to #45.

Wednesday Bible Study- the add-tos, part 3

 

2Pe 1:5  And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 

We are at the knowledge part of the equation, and I'm taking my usual 'different path' here.  I mean, the easy path is to examine the Bereans of Acts 17, or even go back to the admonitions of Moses in Deuteronomy 6 and 11.  But for me inspiration came in the form of the idea Proverbs has drilled into me: Father equals Knowledge, Jesus equals Understanding, Spirit equals Wisdom.  And when I pondered that, I felt God tell me, "Look at the first four times 'Knowledge' is used in Proverbs."  So here they are:

Pro 1:2  To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 

Pro 1:3  to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 

Pro 1:4  to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth-- 

Pro 1:5  Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance...

Pro 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. 

Pro 1:20  Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; 

Pro 1:21  at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 

Pro 1:22  "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 

Pro 1:28  Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. 

Pro 1:29  Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, 

Pro 1:30  would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, 

Pro 1:31  therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. 

So let's dig into this a bit.  First thing you notice is pretty clear: Some will seek knowledge, and some will hate it.  Look at that a bit closer.  It's not just that they won't SEEK it; they actively hate it, because Knowledge is God, and they apparently hate Him.  

At this point, I need to bring up the three kinds of unbelievers, mentioned here in 1:22.  The simple, who just don't know and can be turned by the Spirit;  The fool, who says in his heart, there is no God (Psalm 14:1), but truly knows somewhere deep that there IS a God, but despises the implications; and the scoffer, who just blows it off, like he does everything else.  The Spirit constantly calls out to the simple, and the scoffer can be turned by observing the stripes of the fool, but the fool... his self-interest, his psychological makeup, depends on telling himself AND everyone else there IS no God; hence, the 'Freedom From Religion Foundation' and their constant attacks on believers who mean them no harm.

Next thing I want to dig at are the 2 positives of the four, which I quickly simplified into the easy, "Hear and Fear."  Verse five says, "Let the wise HEAR and increase in Knowledge".  Verse 20 says the Spirit cries out on every street corner.  Knowledge of God IS available, and it is beneficial for "wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity", as well as prudence- all the things necessary to live a peaceful, productive, and happy life on earth are rolled up in knowing God.

But see, you have to FEAR the Lord first.  What does it mean to fear Him?  In the context, it's a step beyond respect; it's tied firmly to love; it's realizing the need for Him.  You cannot gain knowledge of God without this!  How many atheists I've argued with never get this:  You cannot read the Bible with a heart that hates God, and expect it to be anything but a book.  You have to have the relationship FIRST, and that means this type of fear.  Then it becomes a book that lives, and every reading is a chance to learn something you didn't see the time before.

One last thing on the subject before I close:  Verse 31.  Rejecting the word, hating God, can only lead one way.  When you make that choice in your heart, the Spirit will CUT YOU OFF.  You won't get that second chance.

Finally, I want to note a pattern I see growing here in this series of add-tos.  First was faith, a gift from God.  Then Came virtue, which we found you have to work on.  Next comes knowledge, which is another gift from God to those who are open to it.  Next up will be self-control- the ultimate in "You have to do this".  God gifts, we use.  Another simple way to look at this whole thing.

I now interrupt this peaceful venue with story #1.  It began the end of last month, when our company's prescription provider called me and let me know that one of my medicines I was getting at Walgreens for $10 a bottle she could now get me through their Canadian suppliers for free ( which I was already doing with 2 other meds).  She tried to explain it was going to a different Canadian pharmacy- but alas, she called me at work, my machine is loud and my phone quiet, so I didn't quite grasp that.  I did grasp what I was to tell my Doc, and that I would have to tell Walgreens I wouldn't be needing them for it anymore.  I passed the info to my Doc's office, and all would be well, until...

...It gets to be last week, and I've heard naught from my meds!  So, not realizing that I was dealing with 2 different entities (and hearing nothing from the second in any event), I sent an e-mail to the original pharmacy asking what was going on.  To which they replied they NEVER got the Rx (which indeed they hadn't, and for good reason) and gave me info to send to my Doc.  Which I did, and they complied.  One day later, the prescription outfit called me and said that I hadn't gotten my meds because someone had CANCELLED it at the new pharmacy....

"Nuts!"

So, we tried to dope out what happened.  They had to send the meds to the second pharmacy because the first one didn't even carry that pill! (And the guy from the first pharmacy didn't notice that, though it was clearly in the title of my e-mail!) Next, when I told Walgreens that I didn't need that med from them anymore, they must have inadvertently cancelled it for the new pharmacy as well (mistake #3).  So when my Doc's office sent the new info that the e-mail guy requested, that pharmacy asked the provider what was going on, which is when they called me.  The lady at the provider said she would take care of everything, and the pills would be on their way, albeit not getting here until after I run out.  Because, Canada has to send them to LA to be received into the US, and then they come back across country to me.

At this point, though, I still have no contact with Pharmacy #2 (inappropriately enough called Luck Pharmacy), no notice of "your package is on the way" from Canada Post, so the story may yet be developing...

So let's move on to Friday morning...

Now here is where second story begins.  I'd been checking my pedometer for accuracy, and on the rise, I learned that hanging it on the leash belt maybe wasn't a good idea.  Stupidly, I put it right back on the leash belt...

...and shortly after we scared the crane off the pond, I realized it was gone!  We backtracked to where I last knew it was there.  Misty was a big help (lol), as she was not only pissed at turning back (since we had almost caught Oreo), but also got distracted by two big dogs with their dad, and mom pushing toddler in a carriage. (Which we would run into again on the way home!)  I shot off a short prayer, asking God for help in finding the little bugger, it was next to impossible.  Finally, we got back to where we made the turn towards the pond...

...when we saw the season's opening woolly worm!  Looks to be an ULTRA-mild winter, if it's right!  And just then- as if God said, "See I just wanted you to notice the woolly worm", the pedometer dropped out of a fold in my hoodie and landed at my feet....

M10 Show, week #139

 

Boss, what're we doin' the show so late fer?

Because, old friend, in a week where my boss left us in confusion because he had to help his bosses right a company of theirs that may have been run more incompetently than any I've yet heard of, thus allowing us to skate around chaos, and my brain getting so frazzled that I wondered what was wrong with my car because the more I pushed the pedal, the slower it went (yes, my foot was on the brake instead of the gas)... I flat forgot to do the list until a few moments ago.

Good grief!  So what're we doing?

Same as usual, just more groggily.  Thankfully, we only have one debut this week- which we'll save for a little bit, while I bring up this week in 1963, and see what we have here!

Man, I better go start a pot of coffee! (Yawn)

Here in the US, the Ronettes and Be My Baby was at the top-  it was a #2 in Canada, while topping out at #24 in Australia.  In Canada, Jimmy Gilmer's Sugar Shack was in the midst of a 6-week run- it would start a 3 week run here next week, while it would top Australia in the vicinity of our Thanksgiving.  Australia was topped by the lone #1 in the career of Helen Shapiro in Australia, called Not Responsible.  This is one of a handful of songs tonight I will have to play to hear for the first time.  But not right now, I wanna get the show done, and it's so late that Laurie will be home soon, and I won't get a chance because she'll want to watch Gutfeld...

(Sigh), anyway, Our list of big movers gathered quite a crowd once we left the environs of the top 20...

4- The Orlons, Crossfire!  One of that set I'll have to listen to, it peaked 19 here, 36 in Canada, MIA in Australia.  This week, up 16 to 32.

3- Nino Tempo and April Stevens, Deep Purple.  A #1 here, 3 in Canada, 15 in Australia, it jumped 17 to #22 this week.

2- Brenda Lee, The Grass Is Greener.  Another I'll have to listen to, though I believe I've heard it.  #7 here, 73 in Australia, 26 in Canada.  Jumping 18 to #27 this week.

1- The Impressions, It's All Right.  I'll admit to thinking this one was much later on, but at least I know it. A #4 here, 78 in Australia, 25 in Canada.

Wednesday Bible Study: The add-to's, part 2

 

 

... add to your faith virtue...

I knew the search for Virtue would be interesting when I found that, other than here and in a brief use in (I believe) Titus, this word is NOT used in the New Testament this way.  I found it even more curious when I learned the word used in its basic translation means "manly valor"; especially considering what the ONLY lengthy passage in the whole Bible about it is.  But to every mind that reads the Bible, three people come to mind when the word virtue is brought up.  Joseph, who ran from the temptations of Potipher's wife (hardly what THIS world would call manly) and was eventually rewarded not just with power in Egypt, but the reuniting of his family.  Caleb, who refused to buckle under the fears of the ten gutless spies and was rewarded by still having the same vigor that he had as a youth after 40 years of desert life and war; and Daniel, who refused the corruptions offered in Babylon and was rewarded not only with power in Babylon, but by being named, "Beloved by God."

Note that each received reward for their virtue.  But they are extreme examples, I'm sure you would agree.  The most lengthy passage on virtue involves none of those heroic deeds or stands, just everyday life.  And the person with this 'manly valor' isn't a man, but the Virtuous Wife in Proverbs 31.  And her story involves reward, too.

In fact, I distilled from the passage a fairly concrete list of things she does, followed by a reward.  And they are all everyday things.  Let's look at them and learn virtue.

1- Pro 31:12  She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

"First, do no harm."  She keeps in mind the needs and dreams of those around her.  And the reward is in the previous verse:  Her family TRUSTS in her.

2- Pro 31:13  She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. 

Works WILLINGLY.  Finds a way not to grumble at having to do her everyday tasks.  And the reward is the greatness of what she provides her family:  Pro 31:14  She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.  Having her in the family is like a semi delivering goods every day.

Notice how it is those AROUND her getting the rewards?  Good.  We move on.

3- Pro 31:15  She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. 

She's not lazy; she gets right at providing.  Because she is motivated, and willing in spirit, God rewards her with wisdom: Pro 31:16  She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 

4- Pro 31:17  She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. 

Keeping herself healthy and strong, so that she can continue to provide without burning out.  This effects not only her body, but her mind, her understanding:  Pro 31:18  She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. 

5- Pro 31:20  She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 

She is generous, giving where she can to whom she can. Because she provides for others, she knows the Lord will provide for her and hers: Pro 31:21  She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. (Scarlet indicating warm clothes.)

6- Pro 31:24  She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. 

She makes everything with QUALITY.  She labors as if the Lord is her supervisor.  As a result, her reputation bleeds into the family; Pro 31:23  Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. 

7- Pro 31:27  She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. 

This is kind of the 'sums it all up' verse:  She works hard, works with wisdom, and without grumbling about it.  Her great reward is the love of her family:  Pro 31:28  Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. 

So you see, just like we saw last time, these are not things you have to be a superhero of faith to do.  But does it define virtue?  Perhaps Solomon put that best:

Pro 31:29  Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 

Pro 31:30  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. 

Pro 31:31  Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. 

And that, it seems, is 'manly valor'.
