Well, this week I have no top 10 debuts and no good bits, so I thought I'd just give a quick run down of the numbers, and...
Elvis: Waitaminit! You ain't even gonna try ta be funny?
Nope. Just boring old stuff.
Ya can't do that! Ya gotta put in an effort!
I did- I even tried looking up "Elvis jokes"! But the only good one was too dirty and involved Willie Nelson, so...
Willie: Someone call for me?
E: Hey, Willie! Help me talk some sense inta this guy!
You know, we could get into trouble for this- Willie, you're still alive!
W: I've got to say, I've never heard that put as a bad thing before...
E: Oh, just tell him ta hush. It's not like Lawyer Bellbottom is around...
W: Listen, Elvis, I don't quite get what's goin' on here...
E: It's like this, Willie: Ya just took a big hit on the back of the tour bus... just as ya start to nod off, someone puts on Elvis In Las Vegas, an' ya start dreamin'. Yer in a time machine with me an' some cat ya don't know from Adam, an' he's tryin' to do a music show based on his top ten. Only, he's got no new songs to innerduce, so's he gets all whiny an' depressed. So he tries ta tell a joke about me, an' you pop up...
W: Say, that reminds me of a joke with you and me! There's this girl who gets a tattoo...
YOU CAN'T TELL THAT HERE!
E: Tell me it later. Family show, an' all..
W: Gotcha. Show what do we do next?
Next, I take us to our feature, in 1958...
W: I Was sellin' Bibles door to door about that time...
Well here we do a two-pronged feature. Part one is I go to the Cashbox charts for this week in said year, and pick out the songs I wouldn't turn the radio station on.
W: Did he say, "two pronged feature?"
E: Ya just gotta let 'im have his head at this point, Willie...
Part two is what is at the top in our reader's countries- Canada and Australia as well as here- and where my best picks charted for them. So in 1958 this week, While Tommy Edwards was at the top here with It's All In The Game, Canada had just dropped that one in favor of Conway Twitty's It's Only Make Believe...
W: I love Conway. You all ever have him on here?
E: Not yet. Hey, Conway!
Hang on just a sec....
Yeah, Boss, what's up? |
W: Hey, were just helpin' Elvis out with his friend's music show, and we thought about you!
Well, I didn'...
C: I'm up for that! Hey, Loretta!
What's up, Connie? |
C: Music show! Get my guitar!
Could you all just hold it one minute? I've got the features to get through, here!
E: C'mon, I'll getcha set up whilst he finishes payin' the bills!
Gimme strength! Anyway, where was I... oh, yeah, and Australia's #1 this week was The Everly Brothers (and please let's not bring them in!) with Bird Dog. I cobbled together a nine song list of songs I wouldn't turn off, and here are the top three:
Third place goes to Mr Twitty over there and It's Only Make Believe, currently (in 1958) #1 in Canada and a #5 peak in Australia...
Second place goes to Domenigo Modugno and Nel Blu Di Pinta Di Blu, AKA Volare, which topped all our charts...
And my top pick this week...
...the Elegants and Little Star- Which was #11 here this week after peaking at #2, and peaked at 3 in Canada and #8 in Australia.
E: An' now, fer yer lissenin' pleasure, here's Conway n' Loretta!
Reading the first part of this cracked me up and I don't know really why it just did I am still having issues with my flash drive not playing all the songs on it, so frustrating.
ReplyDeleteConsidering I really was considering doing nothing but the numbers, I'm glad you liked.
DeleteWell, that was fun! 😀 You have a flair for dialogue, Chris. Volare is the first song I remember hearing, thanks to my aunt, who had the 45. It was in 1958 and I was only three!
ReplyDeleteThat would have been me with Sherry...
