The Hockey Post

This is that post you don't have to read unless you're interested in hockey- I post an end-of-year review of our "Family league" of teams around the world just for my own records.  But, if you are brave, I'll try to make it entertaining.

I rank them purely by the baseball style 'games back' system, with winning pct only for breaking ties.  Since it's just for fun, I see no need to factor in 'relative strength' or anything else to make it more "realistic".  There are 112 teams- five of us (Me, Laurie, Kc, Shenan, and Misty) by 2 NHL teams each and one each from the 3 Canadian junior leagues, plus the UK's EIHL, France's Ligue Magnus, Switzerland's National League, the Alps League (essentially Italy's top league plus Austria's second level), Austria's ICE HL, Germany's DEL, Norway's Fjordkraft-ligaen, Sweden's SHL, Denmark's Metal-ligaen, Finland's Liiga, Latvia's LHL, Poland's PHL, the Extraligas of Belarus, Czechia, and Slovakia, Hungary's MOL-liga, and the Russian KHL.  Plus, two teams that belong to everyone/no one- the local Ft Wayne Komets, and my girls, the Connecticut Whale of the PHL.

Overall, I came up with the best record at 783-630-1 for a .554 winning pct.  Misty was next at 733-680-1 .519, Shenan nipped Laurie for third by .0007, Shenan 687-649-0 .5142, Laurie 737-698-3, .5135; and KC trailed the pack at a still-respectable 704-682-3, .508.

Accolades-wise, it went thusly:

Chris: Sherbrooke (QMJHL)- Conference champs; Trinec (Czech) Champions, their 5th; Rouen (France)- Champions ( their 17th); DEAC (Hungary)- Hungarian Super Cup (1st); Stavanger (Norway) League (regular season) Champs, Champions (9th); Servette (Swiss)- League champs, Champions (1st).

Laurie: Belfast (UK)- League champs, Challenge Cup champs, Champions (6th); Katowice (Poland)- Polish Super Cup champs (3rd), Champions (7th); Zemgale (Latvia)- Champions (2nd); Herning (Denmark)- Danish Cup (6th); Pardubice (Czech)- League Champs, Dolmitan Cup champs (1st); Zhlobin (Belarus) Champions (3rd).

Misty: Salzburg (Austria)- Champions (8th); Munich (Germany)- League champs, Champions (4th).

KC: Grenoble (France)- League champs, French Cup champions (5th); Krakow (Poland)- League champs.

Shenan: Asiago (Austria)- Italy Super Cup (8th); Vitebsk (Belarus)- Belarussian Cup (1st); Tychy (Poland)- Polish cup (3rd); Jesenice (Alps)- League champs; Champions (1st).

Our individual awards, with Shutouts and hat tricks going the full season, everything else regular season, league games only (Many teams compete also in the Champions League and other out-of league tourneys, which count in our standings):

I split the stats into North American and European, since the North American seasons run so much longer.

Goals- The North American champ is Matthew Maggio of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires (C) with 54, 4 more than Nolan Burke of Sarnia (S) and Kai Uchacz of Red Deer (K).

The Euro goal leader was Scott Conway of Belfast(L) with 39, just nipping Karlis Ozolins of Latvian team Mogo (M) with 38.  Christophe Boivin of France's Rouen (C) was 3rd at 34.

Points: In North America Maggio beat out Jason Robertson of the NHL's Dallas Stars (S), 110-109. Ty Voit of Sarnia (S) took 3rd with 105.

The Euro crown also goes to Conway with 87, beating Ozolins by 4; Daniel Tedesco of Guildford in the UK (S) took 3rd at 76.

Goals-against average: NA Champ goes to Matthew Darveau of Victoriaville, Shenan's QMJHL team, at .929, beating the New York Islanders' Ilya Sorokin (NHL, C) at .924, with everyone else way back.

In Europe, Antti Karjalainen of Jesenice (S, Alps) nudges by the tie-breaker of more games played, Domanik Frodl of Pardubice (L, Czech), who got hurt early on. They both racked up a .946 percentage, beating out Henrij Ancs of Mogo at .944.

Goalie wins: This stat is somewhat corrupted by the fact that 6 of the Euro leagues don't bother to keep it.  But for those who do, Matthew Greenfield of Sheffield (C, UK) led with 36; his nearest competition was Mattias Niederberger of Munich (M, DEL) with 29 and JP Lamoureaux of VSV (C, Austria) with 28.

In the Western Hemisphere, it was Jake Oettenger of Dallas and Daniel Hauser of the Winnipeg Ice (M, WHL) with 37, Domenic DiVincentiis of North Bay (K, OHL) one behind them.

Shutouts:  I tracked shutouts for goalies and hat tricks for skaters all year.  In NA, Sorokin, Oettinger, and DiVincentiis all bagged 6.  In Europe, it was a much bigger game; Henrik Holm of Stavanger (C, Norway) pulled down 17 of 'em, with Karjalainen  second at 12, and Max Carruth of Herning (L, Denmark) getting 11.

Hat tricks: North America Was led by Joshua Roy of Sherbrooke with 5; Daniil Bouroush of Rouyn-Noranda (M, QMJHL) and Tage Thompson of Buffalo (M, NHL) one back.

In Europe, Karlis Ozolins of Mogo put up 6 in just 44 games, 3 more than anyone else.

That brings us to the final standings.  Our top 25:

1- Winnipeg Ice (Misty, WHL) 70-17. Last year, Laurie's Hamilton was best with 68 wins. Winnipeg was #3 last season.

2- Grenoble's Fire-wolves (KC, France) 54-16. They tied for 4 last year.  Here on, I'll put last years spot in the top 20 if they made it, in ().

3- Sherbrooke Phoenix (Chris, QMJHL) 60-22. (14)

4- The Dragons of Rouen (Chris, France) 48-15.

5- Belfast Giants (Laurie, UK) 54-21. (2).

6- Red Bull Munich (Misty, Germany) 58-25.

7- Mogo (Misty, Latvia) 38-6. (18)

8- Acroni Jesenice (Shenan, Alps- Shenan's first season, so MOST of her teams are newbies.) 43-13.

9- North Bay (KC, OHL) 59-29.

10- Stavanger Oilers (Chris, Norway) 47-19. (T4)

11- Guildford Flames (Shenan, UK) 48-20.

12- Zemgale (Laurie, Latvia) 35-9. (7)

13- Red Bull Salzburg (Misty, Austria) 50-24. (6)

14- Pardubice (Laurie, Czech) 45-20.

15- Sheffield Steelers (Chris, UK) 46-22-1. (20)

16- Carolina Hurricane (Laurie, NHL) 60-37. (15)

17- Valerenga (Misty, Norway) 38-17.

18- Ducs de Angers (Misty, France) 44-23. (8)

19- Herning Blue Foxes (Laurie, Denmark) 45-24.

24- Sarnia Sting (Shenan, OHL) 51-32.

25- Toronto Maple Leafs (KC, NHL) 55-38. (17)

And of course, I have to throw in the bottom ten...

112- Gruner (Shenan, Norway) 7-44.  They got relegated, so Shenan will need a new team here next season.

111- Victoria Royals (Laurie, WHL) 17-51.

110- Podhale (Misty, Poland) 3-37. Last year's suck #2.

109- Feha 19 (Shenan, Hungary) 7-36.

108- Dinaburga (KC, Latvia) 2-30. They broke a 24-game losing streak in their second-to-last game, then lost the last one 20-0.

107- Lida (Chris, Belarus) 16-44. Last year's suck champs at 13-46.

106- Soo Ste-Marie Greyhounds (Misty, QMJHL) 20-48.

105- Manglerud (Laurie, Norway) 11-38. But beats last year's 3rd-worst 9-41.

104- Arizona Coyotes (Misty, NHL) 28-54. Last year's #4 suck team.

103- Augsburger Panthers (Laurie, Germany) 17-42.  They also got relegated.

Shenan will also have to replace in Sweden relegated Malmo (20-32).  Our records count all OT results into W/L.
