Yeah, well, it's Wednesday

And as such, I don't have a lot of game to bring.  Topping the news is what Mitt Romney had to say about Obama's support base being basically the chronically out of work.  Rather than go into a whole big deal about this, here's a picture to illustrate my feelings on the topic:

Moving on to more productive conversations, I thought I would note that I have been on Twitter.  Mainly just to get inside sports scoops fifteen minutes before everyone else, and mouthing off to various celebrities that ignore me anyway (BTW Johnathan Vilma, I'm still waiting to here how many of those nine signed affidavits saying you were a saint as a Saint still count after you take out family members and players in the same hot water as you.). But I thought I might take an idea from my friend and dissapointed hockey nut Jewels and mention a few of my blogs stating my political position on my Twitter feed.  Results?  Went from 9 followers two weeks ago to 4 this week.  Two of them were sites that were basically roaming avdertisements, maybe three, and the others were people I didn't know anyway, but isn;t it nifty how people aren't so "friendly" once they get to know you.

Yesterday I got the latest card from The Great Postcard Campaign.  I am puzzled as to who sent it, though, because it's signed "Rx" which tells me nada, and the only clue I have is that she says, "I'm not sure how long it'll take to get to you from N.I."  Now, the only N.I. I have on the address list is "Northern Ireland" but I've already got one from that person.  Add to that it had a big sticker overe the top of all the good stuff that basically said, "Hey, this person didn't put enough postage on it for air mail, so God only knows when you'll get it".  And coming from a place that apparently doesn't put the date on their postmarks, I have know idea how long it's been.  So, who ever it's from, thank you, and if anyone wants to claim it, let me know!

And since I've nothing better to do, let's see what's in the ol' spam box.  Our first contestant is a repeat offender from last time.  Remember I told you about the one that offered 2-3 hours a day, $2,300 a month + 8% commision to start, yada yada?  This time I see WHY I got it.  You see, being that I am currently looking for work (and thus counted as unemployed by Obama), I've been trying various job sites, one of them being the less-than-helpful Beyond.com.  And what do I see smack in the middle of this?
"...Due to close cooperation with Beyond.com..."

Ah.  Okay.  Now I begin to understand why I never use any of the "tips" that Beyond.com sends me.  I might point out to the sender, whether he be "legitimate" or scam, most people should be smart enough to suspect a "business" letter wherein the only way the sender is referenced- at both beginning and end- is "Mr. Kroff".  Also, if you want to tell me that your company is

"... a global leader in the field of IT, Legal and Accounting outsourcing with more than a few decades of success behind us and a promising future ahead, our company remains at the top of the industry, and is poised to push the bar even higher..."  it might well be smart to GIVE THE COMPANY'S NAME.  Just sayin'.

Next up is the standard (and far more professionally done) version of the "the FBI is working with the Federal Government of Nigeria" scam.  I found it interesting for this paragraph cribbed from the middle of the note:

"The U.S Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control, in agreement with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have observed that the high rate of scam and money laundry activities cases perpetrated, has force untold extortion of valuables, people have been asked to pay outrageous amount of money by these impostors. During the verification exercise, you are among 301 innocent victims short-listed to receive their compensation. Therefore, for your own interest and benefit, you are warned to stop further communication or dealing you have with anybody/Banks regarding the claim of your funds."
Good thinking to put the bit about the 301 victim list in there.  However, since you told me not to talk to anyone about my funds (this time seven and a half million), I'm afraid I'll have to erase this letter.  Buh-bye!

Finally, I got this one with the following header:

I AM AYESHA GADDAFI, THE DAUGHTER OF THE LATE LIBYAN LEADER COL. MUAMMAR GADHAFI, I HAVE A VERY CONFIDENTIAL ISSUE TO DISCUSS WITH YOU WHICH I CANNOT DISCLOSE NOW, PLS GET BACK TO ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED FOR MORE INFO

Something that looks like this came from Qaddafi's loins?
And apparently she wasn't kidding about not disclosing now, because after "To: Recipients", there was nothing but a big blank page.  And actually, I didn't know anything past "DISCLOSE NOW" was even there until I started copying it to paste here.  Not to scammers: at least put something in the letter itself.  Even if it's the picture I used above ( and that would probably catch more idiots than anything they would write).

Well, that's it for now.  Hope you enjoyed!

Pimping, pupping, and other stuff

For those of you that enjoyed the little video last night of Miss Deer consuming the scenery, I should point out that she was also just off the parking lot at 5 AM when we left for work yesterday, as well as heading that way at about 5:50 this morning when Scrappy spotted her from the bedroom window.  She's getting WAY too comfortable out this way...

And for those of you doing the math and saying, "Hey, he said they left for work at 5 AM one day, but was at the bedroom window 50 minutes later today?"  there's a reason for that.  Remember how I said a few days ago that we got the option to leave work at 2:30 Thursday and Monday?  Tuesday it became, "You can leave whenever you want, just let your supervisor know.  You don't even have to come in, just call before six.  But this doesn't count next week when we do inventory for two days."  Inventory? Hell, everything will be shipped out by then!  All we'll have to inventory by then will be cracks in the floor, stuff we don't feel like keeping, and the 20 skid or so of 5-10 year old fabric that nobody wants (nor ever did, apparently).  So when Laurie was feeling poorly this morning, I just called us both off.  Besides, I'm waiting on a call from corporate about the 401k.

Next off, I'm going to pimp out Nain from Viewfromdownhere, Not only because she is interesting, intelligent, and has the cutest four-month-old daughter, but she linked up to a site called Tagxedo, where you can give them the url to your favorite social media page, and it will check out your most used words, and with a little encouragement come out with this:

Innit cool?

Next up, I must pimp out Hey Monkey Butt, the latest person to send me love from The Great Postcard Campaign.   She sent me a cool pic of Stone Mountain, GA.  For the uninformed, (Get outta line, Bobby G.) this is the Confederate "Mt. Rushmore", with the images of Jeff Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson carved into its side. Hmmm, I always thought there were four of them!  Learn something new every day.

Okay, so I need to go fetch some sinus spray; if I think of anything else, I'll be back.....

How Scrappy re-injured my back

But first a few notes:

#1- it must be spring!

#2, Thanks again to Hazel from Pablo's Angel for the post card from Ireland via the Great Post Card Campaign !  It was a lovely view of four lighthouses and reminds one that Ireland isn't all potatoes and leprechauns.

#3- The boys from Yaroslavl won game three against Diesel 2-0 yesterday on goals from Alex Shubin and Vladislav Kartaev.  However, this morning's game four wasn't so good.  Two quick second period goals- one by our Alexi Kruchinin and one by professional pain in the rump Petr Khokhryakov had us in a 1-1 tie until late in the game.  But with less than three minutes before OT, Diesel's Alexi Potemina scored the winner as Diesel tied the series with a 2-1 victory.  The series goes back to Penza on Monday for all the marbles.  The winner gets conference champ Dombas, who mowed down Nefteyanik 4-0, 6-0, and 3-1 to reach the conference finals.

And, now, how did Scrappy re-injure the back I twisted in a fall at work Tuesday?

Step one: see the squirrel.

Step two: See squirrel run.

Step three: Nuff said.

"Truth is" Tuesday?

Some of my friends do something called a "Truth is..." Thursday.  Herein you put various little bits of info that might not neccessarily form a coherent post, prefacing each one with the phrase, "Truth is..."  I thought that would be as good a way as any to cover the little knick-knacks I wanted to mention.  Of course, just to be difficult, I'm doing it on Tuesday.

Truth is... I'm happy about getting a post card from Speed Demon, another member of  the Great Postcard Campaign .  SD is a Californian, but is a friend of J Day, our fearless leader, so she's okay. (KIDDING!)  I got a neat card about the Wine Country to go with the other neat cards I've gotten.  And getting a nice postcard sure beats the notice from the US Olympic Committee that they'll give me a windbreaker I don't want in return for a $20 contribution I can't afford.

Truth is... I'm frustrated because now certain Blogger blogs with the pop-up comment box have had the "Check box if you want new replies e-mailed to you" removed.  Therefore, I have to go a hunting if I want to see if my witty responce has drawn a witty rejoinder.  Can Blogger EVER change something that isn't totally ass-backwards, pardon the lingo?

Truth is... I'm tired right now, and the explanation for that is three words long- THAT. IDIOT. MONTOYA.  NASCAR fans will understand.

Truth is... I'm not all that concerned that my Lokomotiv lads got beat Monday by Sputnik 2-1.  They pretty much have their playoff position set, and Sputnik needed it more than we did.  They (Sputnik) play Zauralie Kurgan tomorrow, for the last playoff spot.  Alexi Kruchinin got his 10th late in the game to break the shutout for us.  Tomorrow the season ends and we face Toros (Taurus) of Neftekamsk, who at 30-10-9 are second only to Donbas in the league.

Truth is... I'm glad I always let Scrappy talk me into that walk.

Instead of a twinned dead tree/live tree today, how about a twinned two trees of different species?  Can you here the Stories change the words of Brother Louie?  "Ain't no difference if you're oak or birch..."

Which way did 'e go, which way did 'e go...

Scrappy found his favorite puddle had water in it.   And you know what that means.

Truth is... That's it for today.  Time to pay the rent...

Tids and bits.

A collection of shorties, because...
#1- the "roll-out" shipping season began today for us. Five trucks, one cart, 5 guys, and one hour OT.  Pretty much the same to be expected I'm guessing for the next three weeks.  Add to a very bad dream, wet shoes from last night, a TMI-sequence of draining bathroom trips, an air turner that left little gray marks on black fabric, tearing a truck halfway apart to find two cushions that defied scanning and another with two shipping labels (one seen and scanned, the other hiding on the side), and a half-hour long plant meeting with the company VEEP of production and El Grande Queso, it was a FUUN day.

#2 to say hi to 2 new followers in the last two days!  First there is Ron AKA the old geezer, a man with a very interesting personal testimony and a pretty interesting blog.  Second is Beliza, who is a member of the Great Postcard Campaign and just got the card I sent here way over there in the lovely land of Luxembourg.  You should become a member of the campaign, too, if you are not already.  This is a great time to join since I've just sent out my cards for the first round and won't have to again until all of you send one to me!

#3 is a partial attempt at one of my favorite features here at TAW, where I instruct scam e-mailers on how to do things right.  My latest victim is one Dr. Oswald Daniel; and I'm not going to go through the whole thing other than to compliment the "good doctor" on his peculiar spin:

I am using this opportunity to thank you for using the internet daily.Due to your effort, using internet programs indoor and in your office, we want to compensate you and show our Gratitude to you with the sum of $6,000,000.00 United States of America Dollars we have authorized Rev, Donald Raymond in capital city ABUJA nigeria to assist you in getting your compensation checks across to you.

He claims to be part of World Internet Programs, which with a little imagination we can see is the great and wonderful entity that "runs" the internet, and wants to thank li'l ol' me for wasting so much time on his company's product.  One thing he gets a fail on- Having looked this up on one of the many scam-info sites, I noticed that he changed- or tried to- change his contact man from Mr. Kelvin Green to Rev. Donald Raymond.  He gives the contact info for the good rev, but forgot to delete a whole paragraph of info about Mr. Green's part in all this- or at least forgot to swap names.  Damnit, Oswalt, this stuff is important!  I also think that perhaps you should be grateful to those who use the internet OUTDOORS as well!  Overall grade- C+.

#4- Time for all good daddys and their beagle-babies to hit the hay.  Good night and God Bless, as Red used to say.

Valley of the dolls

A few things on the agenda tonight.  First off, I was informed through the Pat Miller show of a website, AttackWatch.com, which collects alleged smears against the administration of Prez Obama so that they can "send you information" to fight said smears.  Now, you KNOW that this falls into the category "things you should never let Chris find out about".  Needless to say, I decided to join in order to stamp out the horrible disrespect that POTUS gets around here.  My first report to them went like this:

"My dog called President Obama a dick.  I scolded him but he said he heard it from a raccoon he treed a couple of days ago.  I cannot confirm that raccoons are against the President, however he is solidly supported by the neighborhood squirrels."

They even give you a button with which to send attachments.  Therefore I sent them a picture of Scrappy.

____________________________________________________

Next, The Great Postcard Campaign rolls on, and I got my card from "Average Girl" Tracy.  She said she looked for a card with a picture of bottle caps, but had to settle for a mural of the Native People of Chemainus, with whom I am unfamiliar and will have to look up.  It is a very cool mural, though, and will go well with the Southwestern landscape our fearless leader sent last month.

______________________________________________________________

Now, on to the thing I wanted to bloviate about.  Did you, when you were real little, have certain topics come up among the adults around you, that colored your future perception of them?  I'm talking about things that made the "unapproved " or "nasty" list.  Things that gave you the creeps at a mention- like "cancer" or "poison".  Or rock bands that you weren't to listen to- like Black Sabbath, the Stones, or even (to a certain extent) Steppenwolf (doubtless due to the chorus of The Pusher on their first lp.)  Obviously these are the things on my list, things that still give me that vague sense of unease to this days (although it's hard to be intimidated by Sabbath now that every marching band in America play Iron Man or Paranoid).

One of those things on my list is a movie called Valley Of The Dolls.  You old timers (no hands, you know who you are) remember this flick.  It was the cutting edge of what was permissible back then, an R flick that my mom wouldn't let my sister go see.  Most of the hullaballoo was it's treatment of drug abuse, specifically "dolls" (barbituates, probably shortened from Barbie Dolls), along with the teenyest bit of nudity and sex.  By today's standards, it probably would be hard pressed to be called "quaint".  But for a preschooler who heard snatches of conversation, it contained within its forbidden boundaries a near-apocalyptic world of the illicit that was sure to corrupt anyone who watched.

It was only a few years ago I found the Dionne Warwick single of the theme song and burned it.
Gotta get off, gonna get

Have to get off from this ride
Gotta get hold, gonna get
Need to get hold of my pride
When did I get, where did I
How was I caught in this game
When will I know, where will I
How will I think of my name

When did I stop feeling sure, feeling safe
And start wondering why, wondering why
Is this a dream, am I here, where are you
What's in back of the sky, why do we cry

I looked up the plot on Wiki, and learned that it was the story of three women climbing the ladder to fame, or riding along, only to be brought down by the pressures, the temptations, and, oh yes, the dolls.

Yesterday, home with a messed up back, I got to watch the movie for the first time.  A quick set-up here: early last week, I had been musing to myself that, in a sort-of-bucket list way, I needed to see this film, once and for all.  And yesterday, I found it on the on-demand free movies- three days before it ended its run.  I knew I couldn't pass up those kind of omens.

What I saw was a fascinating movie, for all it lacked.  It focused on Ann (Barbara Perkins), a young small-town-going -to-the-big-city-heroine;  Neely (Patty Duke), a trying-to-be- rising star; and Jennifer (Sharon Tate), a dancer hitched by love to a singer named Tony who didn't know he was about to be felled by Huntington's Chorea.  Ann seemed to stumble into good fortune and her share of love and fame; Neely started out a sympathetic figure but slowly the true Neely came out- having worked hard for her fame, she was willing to take what she wanted and steamroll anyone who stood in her way, including her new husband Mel (Martin Milner, 1- Adam-12!).  Jennifer had fame forced on her when, to keep her husband in the asylum he had to be put in, she became a French art-film actress (and you know what that means).  You could tell there were things in the book that didn't make the cut; for example, you never do see how Jennifer actually meets up with the others, and other than Neely, you never see how it is that they all ended up using dolls.  For me, the movie had three great moments.  The first is when everyone first meets Tony and Jennifer, during his stage show at this club where he sings a haunting song called Live With Me to Jennifer.  The second comes when Neely is coming out of that same sanitarium Tony was in (trying to dry out) and tells the story of singing that song at a "dance night" and having Tony, in wheelchair, recover just long enough to do a duet with her; and third, when  Jennifer's suicide (OD on dolls after topping off a hateful mother and a vegetative husband with breast cancer) and Neely's stealing of her man (who was also Neely's agent for her "comeback") drove Ann to attempt suicide by dolls and drowning.  She realizes, once in the water, she hasn't taken enough dolls to accomplish her plan.  She comes back to her room, weighs her choices, and throws the pills against the wall and goes home.

The movie ends with her guy coming back to small town USA to finally propose to her (now that he was done with Neely treating him like crap).  But Ann tells him no, and walks off down a winter trail, breathing deep the clean air of freedom for the first time since she left home.

Gotta get off, gonna get

Off of this merry-go-round
Gotta get off, gonna get
Need to get on where I'm bound
When did I get, where did I
Why am I lost as a lamb
When will I know, where will I
How will I learn who I am?

So it wasn't all it was billed as, and it was more in some respects.  But the thing here, for me, is that this feels like some kind of full-circle to me; like by watching this movie I have started the countdown on some mysterious clock set long ago.  It makes me sad and apprehensive in ways I cannot hope to explain.  You would think I'd have a happy, pulled the fangs out of the dragon's mouth feeling.  And in a way I do.  But in another way I feel like .... God, how to put it... like I've put myself onto the road to some darker fate.  If you'll endulge me my love of Norse mythology, it feels like someone just put the sprig of mistletoe into the hands of blind Hodur.

And there is the whole Sharon Tate thing here, too.  Here's that song, with a tribute montage to her.

More fun with scams

But before we go there, news from the Great Postcard campaign- I got my first postcard!  It was our fearless organizer's turn to send out the cards to all of us, and she quickly found out that some small town P.O.s are a bit behind the times (IOW she had to go to a bigger post office to find someone who knew the cost of a postcard to Mynx in Australia.)  I think this is going to be neat, although with the way work is right now, I'm glad Tracy at Average Girl gets the next round.  Again, you can still join up!  Check out the story here.

Okay, so let's have a look at the latest crop of unscrupulous con men. First up is a contestant who is a first- good elocution, good spelling and grammar!
BUSINESS PROPOSAL

I know that this letter will come to you as a surprise. This letter also will certainly not be enough to tell story of friendship that lasted for years. I am Mr. Kamzi Alex Kokou (A Lawyer by profession) I am currently in the United Kingdom purposely to trace / track down a family member of my client. Mr. Fabio Fuller and his newly married African wife were involved in a car accident after a night out. He died instantly while his wife died two days later in a hospital in Lome Togo where they both lived.
Please do understand that not only that he was my client, we were also friends. In one of our casual conversation he told me that he is of Spanish / English origin was born in South America. He told me that he had two sisters (Imelda) who died as an infant, and (Amelia) who is married to Peruvian who my client told me reside in United Kingdom. My client made a Fixed Deposit with a UK bank valued at Ј7,800,000.00(Seven Million Eight Hundred Thousand British Pounds).
He died on 6th September 2010, and I have tried severally to trace or track down his only surviving sister Amelia through different medium and all my effort proved abortive. He died without a WILL, and possible Next of Kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit document. This sum of Ј7,800,000.00 is still intact in the UK bank, as I have written to the bank as his Lawyer and the holding bank also acknowledged knowing that I am his Legal adviser. Since the UK bank is now aware of my clients demise, my proposal is that I need you to stand in as the Next of Kin to the late Client.
Should you indicate your interest to partake in this transaction, I am willing to direct and provide you with information required for this transaction to pull through. The Funds will be paid to you as the Next of Kin. As the originator of the transaction I will be entitled to 50%, for your role you will receive 40%, while 10% shall be aside to carter for expenses that both of us might incur in this transaction. There is no risk involved in this transaction as my knowledge of my client death guarantees the successful execution of this transaction.
Feel free to reach me on my UK direct line +44-7425837578 or kamzikokou@gmail.com if you are interested to claim this funds as the Next of Kin, it is upon your response that I shall then provide you with more details and relevant information that will help us go about this transaction.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mr. Kamzi Alex Kokou.

Nothing out of the standard, as you can see, just well-written and almost touching as he references his good friend whom he's trying to give their life savings to a stranger.  So I decided to write him back- two words:  "Why me?"  No response as yet.

Our next contestant had no real intention of being convincing.  It was sent by "Chase":  not Chase bank, or Chase Ryan, or what have you- just "Chase".  Although it soon becomes evident who we're supposed to think it is:
Account Requires Complete Profile Update, We have recently detected that different computer user had attempted gaining access to your Online Banking account, and multiple password was attempted with your user ID. It is now necessary to re-confirm your account information to us. If this process is not completed within 24-48 hours. We will be forced to suspend your Account Online Access as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes.

Please update profile immediately by downloading the attached file.

Needless to say, the Attached File was downloaded into the trash.  Come on, you lazy sh!t, You don't even put the name of who you are in the e-mail!  You should go back to my last scam post, and see how often Interpol uses its name in the letter.  As my old boss used to say, "Let's put our thinking caps on."

Next up is possibly the most bizzarre one I've gotten in a while.

#1- Damn, I need to pay the fee to get my money!  Wait... what money? Why am I getting it?

#2- Ah! I'm getting it from the MBLOHBB for hitting the Benin Lottery!  Amazing that a country that has about 2 pots to piss in actually has a lottery, but if I've got to suspend my brain to believe I won a lottery I've no ticket in, I guess I can go along with that too.

#3- Wow, never heard of a lottery who gives you a choice between lump sum and $6,000 A DAY for just under 5 years!

#4- Okay, I'm just a little rusty on my Benin Republic time perionds, I guess.  Is a "minse" like a minute, or a month, or what?

#5- Crap!  I need to figure out what a minse is soon, or they'll donate it all to charity!

#6- And we sure wouldn't want to coffer it as a freewill to a charity, would we?
#7- Okay, just one grammar thing.  "if I'm feeling refusing"?

Okay, that's the group for this time around.  I'd like once again to thank these Ignoranuses (Ignoranous- both stupid and an a-hole) because without them we couldn't have as much fun making sport of people without guilt.
