Went to see Thor today. Here are a few points I take away from it.
1. Deserves an Oscar for casting, especially on Fandral, Heimdall, and Loki.
2. JMS' new takes on Loki and Jane Foster were fantastic, original, and surprising. Especially Loki, because you never quite grok his motivations or if he's on the side of the angels- particularly if you know him from the comic books.
3. Costuming also deserves an award. Especially Thor, Heimdall, and Loki.
4. Most times when the movie departs from the story you know it detracts from it for me. Not this time. Not knowing the backstory doesn't hurt; knowing it, it becomes even more exciting for the differences.
5. FX where wild without being distracting. Altogether, a well done job.
Hard to say anything else without ruining it for those who haven't seen it; well worth the price of admission.
BTW, I looked at the movie experts reviews, and what I said on Time Machine this week still holds. What a pack of jerks. You should climb out of your faux-ivory towers and experience the world for a while, because your judgements from on high S-U-C-K!!! Especially Roger Ebert and Linda Cook. I question whether they actually watched the movie or just spun a wheel with "Good review" and "bad review" on alternate pie slices.

Thanks for the heads up. I am looking forward to seeing Thor. As far as your commentary on critics, all I can say is RIGHT ON.
ReplyDeleteCWM:
ReplyDeleteAgreed with crtics and their "reviews"...
If they dislike a movie, I'm even MORE wanting to see it.
As far as the superhero genre of films go these days, they have FINALLY hit their stride.
My late buddy and myself (both once avid comic colletors) often said they should make MOVIES (and good ones, not hackjob knock-offs) of these characters.
ANd that was back in the mid-70s!
When Superman first came out, we figured (about time)...
Then came a few stinkers, but some that were totally dismissed actually were decent (like the Captain America movie made in 1990.
Starred Matt Salinger (who?), Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, Darren McGavin and featured the Red Skull.
Got absolutely NO press.
Nowadays (and since Spiderman), most all these flicks are top-notch.
I can't wait to see Green Lantern. (one of my favorite characters)
As long as they stay away from being "camp", and play it as intended, it works...and quite well.
I look forward to seeing THOR now, as wel; as the future "followup" movie THE AVENGERS.
Good call.
The trailer for GL played yesterday- looks really good. Not so sure about Cap, though. Of course, a trailer depends on FX and WWII won't have as many as deep space.
