Sunday Message: the Super Seventies

I have to say I learned a lot in the last week or so in my tour through the 70's- of the Book of Psalms.  A lot of good life lessons in these chapters, and I thought I would share the ones that stand out with you.


First, let's go to 71, where we have a prayer that is definitely made for this 55-year-old;

Psa 71:9  Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength fails. 
Psa 71:10  For my enemies speak against me; and those who watch for my soul plot together, 
Psa 71:11  saying, God has forsaken him; pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him. 
Psa 71:12  O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste for my help. 

Just moments later, the anonymous author adds this:

Psa 71:14  But I will go on ever hoping, and increasing in all your praise. 

Psa 71:15  My mouth will make clear your righteousness and your salvation all the day; for they are more than may be measured. 

Isn't that great?  My Bible phrases it, "For I do not know their limits. " Being saved by an UNLIMITED God has its benefits!  And that is why I am here, obeying what is said just a little farther on:

Psa 71:18  Now when I am old and grey-headed, O God, give me not up; till I have made clear your strength to this generation, and your power to all those to come. 

But sometimes, you look at your sins, and wonder how you dare open your mouth about a Holy God.  Psalm 73 covers that:

Psa 73:22  As for me, I was foolish, and without knowledge; I was like a beast before you. 

Psa 73:23  But still I am ever with you; you have taken me by my right hand. 

Psa 73:24  Your wisdom will be my guide, and later you will put me in a place of honour. 

How about that?  Here, Asaph explains how God EXPECTS we're going to do stupid stuff- even to the point of being as dumb as, say, Scrappy- and YET He has us by the hand!

But what about all the people out there that say Christians are hateful, are foolish, who don't deserve to be treated like everyone else, such as the unesteemed Mr. Sanders?  Well, just back on up a little bit:

Psa 73:15  If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I would deceive a generation of Your sons. 

Psa 73:16  When I thought deeply in order to understand this, it was painful for me, 

Psa 73:17  until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end. 

See, it isn't about this world, my friends.  Those under the "strong delusion" of 2 Thessalonians 2:11 can twist or manufacture "facts" all that they want.  But their tables and their political correctness will hold no weight when they come before Almighty God.

I have talked many times about my life verse, and setting up "stones" to look back on for comfort and encouragement when things are going bad.  And there are many times that God will seem, for whatever reason, so far away.  Asaph brings that up in Psalm 77:

Psa 77:7  Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? 

Psa 77:8  Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? 

Psa 77:9  Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah. 

Psa 77:10  And I said, This is my anguish: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. 

Psa 77:11  I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. 

Psa 77:12  I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. 

If you are faithful, God is faithful; if you fall off, God is still faithful.

And I close coming back to a verse that kinda puzzled me.  That one was in Psalm 76, and the explanation I just found goes a long way towards helping understand what our actions should be in this evil, Bernie Sanders-world...

First, the verse:

Psa 76:10  Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. 

And then the explanation, from Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:

 We live in an angry, provoking world; we often feel much, and are apt to fear more, from the wrath of man. What will not turn to his praise, shall not be suffered to break out. He can set bounds to the wrath of man, as he does to the raging sea; hitherto it shall come, and no further. Let all submit to God.

Tread carefully today- we are at the beginning of my timeline- I am 24 days old today, June 9th, 1962!  And in today's news, South Korean boss-man Park Chung-Hee has told everyone they have to switch from the old SK Hwan to the NEW SK Won.  He froze everyone's bank accounts and exchanged them at a rate of ten Hwans per Won.  Later, with a little "persuasion" from the US, the rule was rescinded because nobody could tell their hwan from their won.

And today we have a densely packed Time Machine, with yet another runaway winner of the Panel; a song mentioned on the UK's greatest hits feature becomes an M10 debut; the Cashbox top ten gets ignored, and we look at what is happening to the songs born into the hot 100 the same time I was!  Come along, every Won's a winner!

Then we could sit back and listen to the legendary Ray Charles groove us with Born To Lose, at #40.

Back to the slow dance floor, and I will sing in your ear along with Darrell McCall's Dear One, which was a sweet ballad despite not charting.  The song was charted though, by Larry Finnegan, who took it to #11 a couple of months ago.

And we can continue when Ray sings the flip side of his earlier song, I Can't Stop Loving You, which sits at #1.

A little lady named Lucky Starr sang one we can get down to- The original, Australian place-named version of I've Been Everywhere, which waited to chart here until Hank Snow had the writer do American place names.

Or, we could rock to Freddy Cannon's Palisades Park, which was at #3...

If you like a little ch-cha-cha, we could dance it with another Aussie by the name of Rob EG, or actually Robie Porter, and his song called Si Senor...

#5 was Johnny Tillotson's It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin';
#4 was The One Who Really Loves You by Mary Wells;
and #2 was Mr. Acker Bilk's Stranger On The Shore.  How did you miss those?

The week I was born, 10 brand new songs had entered the hot 100.  How were they doing 24 days later?  Well some good, some not so much.

The debut at #94 was a sweet song by the Paris Sisters, well known for their big hit I Love How You Love Me.  This one, Let Me Be The One, went to #90 the next week, and was done.

Two songs came in at #100 that week.  One was Brook Benton (Rainy Night In Georgia) with Thanks To The Fool, which made it up to #86 after 3 weeks and fell off.

The other was the Champs (of Tequila fame) covering Limbo Rock, which died at #93 after three weeks.

Now the rest were still climbing after 24 days... some faster than others.  The first Hispanic duo to crack the hot 100, Rene and Ray, had climbed 11 spots to #84 with Queen Of My Heart, a song that deserved a little better IMHO.  A woman known as the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, was at 71, up 14, with a ballad called If I Cried Every Time You Hurt Me.  Fats Domino had climbed 18 spots to 59 with My Real Name.  Another woman with a royal title, this time the Queen of the Blues, Dinah Washington, and her song Where Are You had climbed 40 spots to #56.  A side note on DW- her 7th hubby, football great Dick "Night Train" Lane- woke up to her body one morning after she'd sleeping pilled herself to death.



Jimmy Smith had moved Walk On The Wild Side (nothing close to the Lou Reed version, thank God) 38 notches to #33;  Bobby Vee had moved 63 spots to #34 with Sharing You; but the biggest mover, zooming up 83 notches to #17 by this time...

...Emilio Pericoli and Al Di La!  You could have that dance with him, Jo-Anne...

Our other debut was the runner up in a three sided race last week that saw Kidsmoke get the final spot.  This time, it won the two-off battle and comes in at #9.  The solo project of one Greta Morgan, who goes by the moniker of Springtime Carnivore...

The #62 in '62 was Connie Stevens with Why'd You Want To Make Me Cry.  For a lady I constantly mix up with the more famous Connie Francis, she only had two big hits (we mentioned Kookie Lend Me Your Comb a few weeks back in '59) and this wasn't one of them, dudding out at #52.


I knew 19 of the songs well this time... kinda disappointed in myself.

The UK #1 was Elvis (what a surprise!) with Good Luck Charm.  The highest charter there that charted this week here was a lady who's been on TM before- Ketty Lester, with Love Letters, 11 there and 75 here.  The highest here that charted there was Stranger On The Shore, 2 here and 12 there.

And who sat in the #101 slot?  Why Dee Dee Sharp and her follow up to her current #9- Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)!

And the one that got away- remember Scooter?

Well, Saturday, we were sitting out back, with Scrappy chillin' for a change, and Scooter climbed out on that very branch (just not that pic- I left the camera inside), and after looking us over for a while, he LAID DOWN ON THE BRANCH.

  (Yeah, remember the squirrel I made fun of at the zoo?  Just like that, except his legs draped off the branch.)

He stayed this way for a few minutes, until Scrappy got bored and walked away.  Apparently, Scooter hadn't noticed Scrappy, being more interested in chillin' to the oldies with us, but when he got up, THEN Scooter knew he was there.  And he got up, pissed-off look on his face.  And he chattered, which Scrappy paid no mind to.  And he started BARKING.  And THAT Scrappy heard.  But, in true Scrappy fashion, he identified the correct area it was coming from, but failed to look UP, as he was right underneath Scooter.  So he wandered off.  And Scooter, after a little more grumbling, wandered off as well.

Sunday Message: Between Mizpah and Shen

A simple message today.

A few nights ago, I was reading Psalm 68, where lies a verse that has a great meaning for me.  I came upon it several years back, when I was living alone.  My kids were with their mom and I was barely able to keep a roof over my head.  I was working a second job cleaning as much out of killing a few more hours till sleep as for the extra gas money.  I had a Church but was really not connecting the way I should have been.  And in Psalm 68, I found a promise that seemed awfully far away...

Verse 8.  "God sets the solitary in families."

And the night I read that again, it struck me just how much God kept His promises.  I have Laurie.  A better job.  A grandchild!  And of course Scrappy.  The verse goes on:  "...He brings out those who are bound into prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a dry land."  I was bound, for real.  Being a Christian but surely not living it all that well.  I had runes around my room, my hope for a break in the week rested on the largesse of a buddy who drug me along on his strip club adventures.

Didn't see the connection between my dry land and my rebellion.


At times, I was as close to God as I have ever been, before or since.  But that was because of how far I had strayed, and how lost from the sheepfold I was.

And now?  This is a promise that God has fulfilled.  Am I changed?  I've made progress, but in God's eyes (or maybe just mine), it's the progress of an ant on a round the world trek.  God is not faithful because of us, He is faithful IN SPITE of us.

And when I read that verse again, I thought of my life verse, 1 Samuel 7:12:  "Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Eben-Ezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us"; and realized once again that I was looking back at a stone set up because the Lord had helped me.


Do you know what Mizpah and Shen mean?  Well, yeah, they are place names, but if you track them back a step farther, the stone set up was between "the watchtower" and "the crag."  I am continually on my journey from the crag to the watchtower.  And once again, I am reminded of all the stones I have set up along the road.

Scattered thoughts on jumping Paris

So now we are a terrible country and a terrible race, who have doomed the world to a fiery dystopia because we pulled out of the Paris accords.  Let's take some issue with that.

Everybody else is for it.  Well, what a surprise, since we are expected to cut emissions more than anyone, with all its catastrophic short- and-long term effects, AND pay for the little noodnik countries to do it too.  WE develop the tech.  WE pay for the tech.  WE give the tech to third worlders who are barely past picking lint out of their toes.  And, WE pay them to do it.  Why WOULDN'T the rest of the world be in favor?

"Corporate America", for example Exxon, are in favor of staying in.  Is it too obvious to mention that that which harms coal is good for Exxon?

Climate change is "settled science."  ANYone who uses the term "settled science" with a straight face is a horse's ass.  Any true great scientist would probably say, " 'settled science is dead science.  It is science that is unimaginative, incurious, uninspired, and stale.' "  If you have an honest bone, whether you believe in climate change or not, THAT much you should agree with.

The world's temperature is rising, and it's man's fault.  At the original Earth day in 1970, these same kind of doom and gloom, man's at fault "scientists" told us that by... uh... fifteen years ago, we'd be living on a frozen planet, and be out of the oil that both caused the problem and was our only hope of surviving.  I'm wearing shorts today, how about you?  What's the difference?  Logic tells us that, all things being equal, in 1970 the enemy was oil, and in 2017 the enemy is coal.

So why not alternative energy?  Well, how about because it doesn't work without MASSIVE government subsidies (ask Merkel to tell the truth on that one), and if we are paying for the new tech, and we are giving it for free to Bagswanistan, and we are subsidising Bagswanistan to USE the tech, and we are paying the high prices that closing down cheap energy causes, who the hell has any money left to subsidise that damn wind turbine that nobody wants in their back yard because it looks ugly and might chop the rare two-breasted purple cow eagle in two?

Corporate America, part two:  Bill Ford says,  "We believe climate change is real, and remain deeply committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our vehicles and our facilities."   Well, bully for you!  If your company had been doing that all along, perhaps we wouldn't be in half of whatever mess we're in, and India and China might not be gagging on exhaust from the cars you built back when you didn't give a crap.

California... tumbles into the sea...:  Governor Moonbeam Brown posted this "broadside:

 "...California will resist this misguided and insane course of action. Trump is AWOL but California is on the field, ready for battle."

Yeah, maybe you better worry about the collapsing infrastructure of your insane, misguided water policies, gov.  It isn't climate change that diverted all that water from its natural course of=ver the last century and a half.  And THAT's why YOUR climate is changing.  Enjoy your desert.

And of course, the BBC.  In an article about the five effects of the US pullout, there was this gem:

Despite President Trump's withdrawal from the accord, US carbon will continue to drop. The projections are that they will fall about half as much as had been planned by President Obama. That's because US energy production is now powered more by gas than by coal.
The fracking revolution has seen a huge jump in the production and a huge drop in the price of natural gas. Energy producers like gas because it is flexible and integrates better with renewable sources which are also growing rapidly.

So let's unpack this.  DESPITE Trump's actions, the emissions will CONTINUE to drop because the companies that SHOULD have been switching energy needs in the first place (like Ford) are going to change ON THEIR OWN- which is they way change SHOULD take place.  Not from some regulation that will give those in harm's way no time for adjustment.

And, now fracking is GOOD?  I thought only evil Satans liked fracking, because a few people want to try to get free water softeners out of the deal.  The hypocrisy is YUUUGE.

And a bit before that:  There's also a question of moral leadership, which the US will be giving up, which may have consequences for other diplomatic efforts.   I always thought leadership was NOT following the crowd when you know you are right.  Apparently the new morality is the morality of lemmings.

So we zoom in to the covfefe world of June 2nd, 1961, where we find Albany NY's WGFM, one of the oldest FM stations in the US of A, became the first to broadcast FM stereo.  They adopted a classic music format (they had been simulcasting AM's WGY) to showcase the new technology.  They actually started the day before, using a combined system developed by GE and Zenith; it sure beat the crap out of the 50's version of "stereo" where you had to tune two radios- one to the station's AM signal, and another to their FM broadcasting the second channel.  I can't imagine THAT was a real hoot.

Our 6D victim was Shep and the Limeliters with the original of Daddy's Home at #4.  This tune was covered in 1981 by Cliff Richard and he hit 23 here.  But in the UK, he was held out of the #1 slot four straight weeks by the Human League's Don't You Want Me.  That tune was mentioned as being "at the time" the 23rd biggest seller in UK history, which of course got me wondering what did top the UK all-time sellers list.  The thing that amazed me was that the Stones, the Moody Blues, the Who- they all got shut out of the top 40! (In the meantime, Aqua's Barbie Girl made #18.)  So too, despite all his chart hits there, was Sir Cliff.  But what DID make the list, you ask?

On the subject of the UK charts, Elvis was at the top with Surrender, and two of our Panel contenders made the flips- Runaway was the highest UK charter on the US charts (2 there, 10 here), while Running Scared was the highest here currently charting there (1 here, 27 there).

At our #61 in '61, we have a tune called The Continental Walk by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.  Now Hank had a good string of R&B hits back in the day- despite having his most famous string of hits banned from many stations for alleged sexual innuendo.  They included the R&B #1 Work With Me, Annie, the follow up Annie Had A Baby (guessing she worked with him), and the #10 Annie's Aunt Fanny, which I assume sounds worse because of the pattern than it really was..

Debut number three is one I've been trying to squeeze in for a while, and I have finally succeeded.  With their third M10 hit, though this time with Mike Del Rio rather than Krista Ru singing, here is POWERS:

This week I knew 19 of the hot 100, and we had a bubbling under list!  At 101 was Bobby Darin covering an old Nat King Cole hit, Nature Boy.  Nat took it to the top in '48- just as the musician's unions all went on strike to protest something in the Taft-Hartley Act.  Thus, Nat's record company was the only one able to sneak the song out, before the ban, with an orchestra- but it didn't stop others from trying.  Both Dick Haynes and Sarah Vaughn released a cappella versions that each peaked at #11, while Frank Sinatra rounded up a choir back-up and cracked the top ten at #7.  Bobby would make it to #31 when he tried it 13 years later.

Ruth B spends a third week at #6 with Dandelions.

Nothing But Thieves crank up three notches to #5 with Amsterdam, as do Flogging Molly at #4 with The Days We've Yet To Meet.

The Orwells tumble from the top to #3 with They Put A Body In The Bayou.

Beach House slides up one to #2 with Chariot.

And that means the 50th #1 in M10 history belongs to...
