So here we go to May 7th, 1970, and I've already screwed up more stuff just trying to get the stupid co-ordinates right (for the first time since March, as it turns) than I do in a normal post!  Let me see what happened that day and maybe we'll find a clue about my pressing imbecility:

Hmmm... this date, the FCC announced that starting in September, networks would have to let the local stations have the show until 8 PM, instead of 730 or earlier, thus making the world safe for Alex Trebek...

Say, Alex, since you're here, and you obviously meet the requirements to be on this show, how about you be the guest host this week with me?  Just don't let on to the lawyer...

Why not?  I like all kinds of music!

Well, I suppose if you get technical... but I do issue the disclaimer most weeks that we're all imaginary, so we should be good.

So we had a 26 song- 81 station Panel this week, and it might have been the tightest race as far as multiple contestants involved ever! The winner had 8 votes, another had 7, 3 had 6, and 2 more had five!  If I really wanted to stretch things, another 7 had three or four votes, but lets keep it here.  Alex, they are the contestants that made the final, with their Cashbox chart positions for the week...

HB:  Well, I see once again we are trading light on legality and heavy on humiliation, so once again I am to do what is misnamed the "live" 6 degrees.  Let us see...

Ah.  So Roger McGuinn of the Byrds used a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar to make the signature sound of the band on songs like Eight Miles High- songs that led them to be called the masters of Jangle rock.  Jangle rock is a term still used, notably for our own M10 supergroup Alvvays.  However, in these more modern times, bands like Alvvays and fellow M10 supergroup Beach House are also termed Dream-pop.  Dream pop has been around for a long, long time, and one of the pioneers often cited by current bands as an influence is Phil Spector and his "Wall of Sound" productions.

One such production was the first million seller by a former member of my late clients, the Beatles.  And that would be our 6D 'victim'- John Lennon's Instant Karma (We All Shine On), at #5 without one of the 4 score Panel votes.

HB:  Sir, I am NOT a game player; I'm barely adept in THESE matters.  However, if you insist...

AT:  Well this week, we have a first for the feature- two different songs are on top of two country's charts!  The lone solo is for South Africa, who had the Tee Set and Ma Belle Ami, a song that peaked in the US in March.  Both the UK and Canada were topped by Spirit In The Sky; Australia and New Zealand both chose Let It Be.  And the week's big mover was a tasty instrumental by El Chicano called Viva Tirando, which moved up 22 spots, from 75 to 53.

Okay, that leaves us with the six M10 songs we haven't mentioned...

 

6- up 3 for Major Murphy and Attention;

5- down 2 for Maddie and Tae's Woman You Got;

4- Evanescence up 2 with Broken Pieces Shine;

3- The Overcoats with Tennis, up 3 with The Hardest Part;

2- same as last, Blackberry Smoke and Ain't The Same;
