What is it about nice people that attract total idiots?Nice people are martyrs. Idiots are evangelists.

Wednesday Bible Study- L is for Lazarus

Today I want to look at many questions involving Jesus's friend Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead.  There are a lot of intricacies in this story that you- and I- don't see at first glance.

First, we have a skeptic's question.  This was undoubtedly Jesus's biggest miracle before His own death and resurrection.  So why is it that three Gospels skip it, and only John tells it?  Well, first off, Not every Gospel tells every story- four different men at four different times, four different relationships to Jesus.  Of 37 recorded miracles of Jesus, three were told by Matthew alone, one by Mark, 6 by Luke, and 6 by John.  Second, the commentators agree that since the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew Mark and Luke) were written presumably in the renewed lifetime of Lazarus, they left it out because the Pharisees were after him as it was...

Joh 12:9  When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
Joh 12:10  So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,
Joh 12:11  because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

Which brings us to a second question of the curious- how long did Lazarus live after his raising?    Well, despite Wiki's best efforts to cloud the issue, let's look at the dates the Gospels were probably written.  If we go by Church Father Eusebius, Matthew was written in 41 AD;  Mark is generally accepted as being a source for, and thus before the writing of, Luke's Gospel.  One source that looked at the question felt that evidence in the text showed that Acts was written during Paul's imprisonment but not after his execution; as Luke had to be written before Acts, this source placed it no later than 60 AD, which puts Mark not much later than 55 AD.  Tradition says Lazarus lived 30 years from one death to the next, putting his second death some time after 63 AD.  This would have Lazarus still alive at the time of their writing.  Add to that that the only one of the three probably there at the time- Matthew- wrote his (according to Eusebius) just 9 years after the fact, and that seems reasonable.

John, though, is assumed to have been written while he was on Patmos, which would push it several decades after Lazarus's second death.

Thirdly, an "understanding the plot" question.  Was this Lazarus the same as the one in the Parable about Lazarus and the rich man?  Some people do think so, but I think they aren't paying attention.  First of all, if the beggar Lazarus had 2 sisters that loved him that much, would they not take care of him rather than letting him beg a rich man's scraps?  Second, the pitiable condition of beggar Lazarus contrasts with the quick illness and death of the other one.  Why would Jesus bring a man who had suffered so much on earth as the beggar back for what wouldn't be much better?  Just to prove a point to his knucklehead Disciples?  Which leads to...

But now, here comes my foundational question- Why was it necessary?  I'm not trying to be cruel to the poor guy, but listen to what Jesus said about the death of Lazarus:

Joh 11:14  Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died,
Joh 11:15  and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

So Jesus let him die for the sake of these knuckleheads.  Why knuckleheads?  This would be the THIRD time they would watch him raise someone from the dead- well, the second for everyone but John, James, and Peter.  The first had died fairly recently when Jesus saw them carry him out on a bier, followed by his grieving widowed mother, who would now be left to die in poverty.  His name was left out (though his hometown of Nain was mentioned- and this is a story I may get back to later), thus Luke- and Luke alone- tells it, to set up part of what happens next.  See, right after, word got to John the Baptist, stuck in Herod's prison, and sent his people to ask if Jesus were the One (and after the fact of Jesus's baptism, I think this may have been John's way of getting his boys to stop waiting around for him, in a jail he'd never leave).  And Jesus answered:

Luk 7:22  And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
Luk 7:23  And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."

(NOTE:  It goes on to say that John's disciples then left, presumably to relay the message.  At which point John prolly told them, "SO WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?"  But, that's speculation...)

The second time was Jairus's daughter, and all three of the Synoptics tell that story, presumably because Jairus was a high official and could take care of himself.

So now, they've seen Jesus raise someone from the dead.  And yet, Peter objects every time Jesus tries to tell them that He will be killed and raised up on the third day.  And yet, when Jesus says, "Let's go check things out", He has to hear this:

Joh 11:7  Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."
Joh 11:8  The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?"
Joh 11:9  Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
Joh 11:10  But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
Joh 11:11  After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him."
Joh 11:12  The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
Joh 11:13  Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
Joh 11:14  Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died,
Joh 11:15  and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."
Joh 11:16  So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

"Let's go die with Him."  Because they still don't think that His talk of dying and rising again is any more than one of the Parables He tells everyone else- DESPITE the fact He told them:

Mat 13:10  Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"
Mat 13:11  And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

So now they gather around and watch him raise someone, not just dead, not less than a day dead- but FOUR DAYS in the grave.  They have the testimony of the sisters and the whole town that he's dead four days.  Everyone is braced for the smell when the rock is rolled away (John 11:39).

"LAZARUS, COME OUT!"  And out he comes, bound head to toe.

This was Jesus giving the Knuckleheads every last little chance to BELIEVE what He was about to do before He did it.   And yet....

The very last important thing about Lazarus is this little bit everybody forgets...

Joh 11:44  The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

Now Jesus had just wept at the thought of the man, his friend, having died.  Wouldn't you think of helping this guy out yourself, rather than giving an instruction and walking away?  Consider this:  No matter the seed the human preacher, the human father, the human friend, plants in you, it is the Spirit who leads you to accept Christ as savior;  afterwards, it is YOUR job, then to disciple them, to take the rags of death and ignorance off the newly reborn believer so that they can clearly see.

Jesus NEVER wastes an action.

But the summation backtracks- are you a knucklehead?  How many times do YOU have to hear what Jesus did for you before you will believe what He WILL DO for you?  I ask myself that all the time.

And one final thought- Lazarus was reborn- but still lived in Bethany.  The world didn't change- but I sure bet HE did.

NewspageGo!

Today, we're going to go to our favorite newssites and seeing how long it takes to hit a non-newsworthy headline!  Shortest trip to the non-story wins!

FoxNews:  The ink stink

Headline:  'Game of Thrones' star's tattoo was major spoiler all along

So shoot me if I'm not a GoT addict, but when your whole story is about whether a tattoo a show's star got BETWEEN SEASONS was either a "quote from the previous season" or a "finale spoiler," you- like I- may have too much time on your hands.

Place of headline: since I read left to right, and it was one of the 2 stories beneath the banner, Sophie Turner's tat gets a 3.

CNN:  And hear I thought it was about Ridin' the Storm Out

Headline:  Hearing on housing turns into confusion over Oreos and REOs

I like Ben Carson, I really do.  But those who claim he was unqualified for HUD secretary got a major win today when he was questioned by a senator about REOs : real estate owned properties, properties that fail to sell at foreclosure auctions.  Now, I can't say that I myself would have known what it was; but I would have known she wasn't talking about OREOS, which Ben apparently did.  This doesn't fit the category 'non-news' as much as 'shouldn't have been news'.

Nor do I think I would have made a twitter joke of it, either.  You might end up on Newspage Go!

Place of headline: #9.

Moscow Times: Now you see it...

Headline: Russia Has Most Protected Natural Areas in the World, WWF Says
Russia has 3.3 times more protected natural areas than previously thought.

Okay, so the gist of this story is the Russian branch of the World Wildlife Fund published a complaint in January of last year that Russia was supposed to open up such and such amount of land to natural protection, and had only created just over half the amount of new areas that they were supposed to over the year period, which itself was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their first nature reserve.  Today, though, the WWF-Russia has suddenly discovered that they "left out" of their count "cultural heritage sites and territories of traditional use" (I'm guessing they are talking about any podunk tribal village without a 'civilized' government here), and that when you add THESE lands in, why, the land amount jumps 315%!  So now, Russia goes from being delinquent in nature preservation to the world leader- just like that.  I think the last time I did a news-type post, I mentioned that my very first copy of the Guinness Book of World Records way back when noted that the Russians had also claimed to invent beer and baseball.  Now, they can invent nature preserves as well.

Headline place: #12.

BBC:  AI meets #Metoo

Headline:  'Alexa, Are You Perpetuating Bias?'

Let me allow the BBC to explain this one...

AI-powered voice assistants with female voices are perpetuating harmful gender biases, according to a UN study.

These female helpers are portrayed as "obliging and eager to please", reinforcing the idea that women are "subservient", it finds.

Particularly worrying, it says, is how they often give "deflecting, lacklustre or apologetic responses" to insults.

Like maybe it should be more like, "Alex, what's the square root of 243?"

Alex: "Use a calculator for once, mouth-breathing moron..."

There you go: male and non-subservient...

Headline place:  #8

Xinhua: Or as we like to call it, 'The Xi Chronicles"...

Headline:  Xi stresses military personnel education for strong armed forces

I have long wanted to make the point that Xinhua usually starts every day with at least three or four articles of the nature of, "Xi congratulated Numbnutistan on recent election", "Xi toured workers' vegetable garden", Xi rescued cat from tree", etc.  This was my opportunity.  The strikingly newsworthy headline concept was matched by the amazingly insightful pull quote that came with it:

Military education should meet the requirements of combat, the needs of the armed forces and the demands of future missions, said Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Wow, the man's amazing.

Headline place:  The LEAD!  We may have a winner here...

Japan Times:  Youngest NewspageGo! player, too...

Headline: 10-year-old Japanese go professional debuts on international stage

Sumire Nakamura is a real cutie.  And she's a pro at the game of Go, which means she would probably beat me 500 times before I ever figured out what I was doing.  She lost her opening match in Beijing, which drew a large TV audience in China (possibly because the other channels were covering Xi saving the whales).  And now, she becomes the youngest international victim of NewspageGo!

Headline place: #6.

Deutsche Welle:  Wait, where did Oettinger Brewing place?

Headline:  Fire department tops German survey

So they did a survey in Germany to rank which institution was "most contributing to the public good", and firefighters topped the list, followed by 'Technisches Hilfswerk' (BTH) (think FEMA or the National Guard), the German Red Cross, the police, and the constitutional courts.  Hugging the bottom were cigarette company Marlboro, football organizations FIFA and UEFA, the tabloid Bild, Deutsche Bank and social media giants Twitter and Facebook.  The Catholic Church took a beating as well, though religious based charities fared better.

Sadly, I saw no breweries on the list.  But, IKEA was #55, Microsoft #81, IBM #86, Disney #91, UPS #107, Coke #121, McDonalds #124, and Starbucks #127 out of 137...

Headline place: #6

News.AU (Australia):  Right there next to Waldo...

This one needs no further comment...

Headline:  Spot Kate and the Queen in this photo

Headline place:  #1 on the world page...

And the winner:  Australia!!!

The tie at #1 broken by the sheer stupidity of the banner...  Congrats, News.Au!

Picture talk

So yesterday on FB, I got a little fed up.  And here's what I told the world (as many of you know)...

You know what, everybody? There are people who will just hate whoever the other guy is in politics. There are people who will never give up on defending a "woman's right " to murder babies. There are people that will believe every motivation of a white is race hatred, every motivation of a man is rape, every motivation of a scam post is to give you free money. How about you all just shut up about that crap for a while and tell me what you did to ENJOY YOUR DAY for a change? Just sayin'.

Not surprisingly, this was one of the most commented things on FB I ever did- at least, that wasn't heartbreaking!  Among the answers I got were: eating ice cream, grilling (and getting a new grill), lazying around with kids or pets, watching baseball, grad parties, church, bed-and-breakfasting and other foodie-related stuff, and playing with little ones- for example, this guy:

And since I'm pretty much still of this same mind, I thought I might show you a couple pics and share a couple stories.

I think they're putting in a church down the road...

Kitty in the ditch...

This whole cardinal thing was kinda funny.  When I first saw them, the male and female were doing like a courtship dance.  When I got closer, the pair went one way- and another male who was apparently "with them" went another.  The pictures here are after I ran into the trio a second time, thus relieving me of the guilt of breaking up "Bachelor: Cardinal".

I believe this was what kitty was waiting for- but mom had them well downstream...

Oh, yeah, did I tell you they tore the old wooden bridge out?  Prolly figured it was the only way to keep me from falling through since I ignored the barricades...

Starlings have a nest in this hole- I wasn't fast enough to get a snap of the in-and-outs...

"Hey, a little privacy?"

Thinking of the many times we sat here, and the many times Scrappy waded here, I cried taking this...

Get the indigo bunting before he takes off...

Scrappy's favorite watering hole has new tenants...

Now that the porch is no longer "doggie restroom", I decided to make it more livable with this nice planter- which was way too heavy for the former "auxiliary bird feeder" post and had to be secured with string.  Afterwards, Laurie and I had a nice au fresco lunch.  Chip the chipmunk joined us, briefly.  The sparrow mafia made plans to rub us out.  And the weirdest thing- see the knothole in the fence, bottom right?  a bee- I'm guessing from out of town- or else one of those flies that try to fake being a bee- was sitting there, with a local bumblebee hovering about 3 inches away- never moving, never looking away.  Prolly about 15 minutes.  Finally, the watcher nudged him in the butt, he tried to take off, and the flier beat the crap out of him!  Took him to the ground, let him up, he got back on the fence.  The other bee kept an eye out, but began to move around a bit more.  Seeing an opening, the other one took off- and it might be the first time I ever saw one fly a straight line, right on outta Dodge!

After that, we concluded the meal by Laurie christening the porch by dropping a china bowl.

The pool's open- just not for humans...

Walking in the rain...

Noobie always shows up right around church time...

Sunday Message: Lord's Prayer pt. 3

Long long ago, I was a second grader in a Catholic school.  Which meant we had a daily religion class taught by a nun.  One day, Sister Ann asked as SHE taught this same subject, "What does it mean to be 'hallowed'?"  I raised my hand to say, "Holy", but she called on a girl, who said, "Hollered?"  I knew that was nowhere close to the point, but Sister Ann wasn't so much hoping for a right answer as a right direction- remember, second grade.  And so she said, "RIGHT!  His Name should be holllered!"

Amazingly, even then I understood WHY she did it, but I still thought it was stupid.  Personally, I think she would have accomplished more with, "Well, not quite..."

So what is 'hallowed'?  Keep in mind, we have to look at two places it is used and see how they match up- the Hebrew Old Testament, and the Greek New Testament.

The earliest OT use I found (not claiming exhaustive research here) is Exodus 20:11-

Exo 20:11  For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (KJV)

Now this word- which other versions translate here as 'sanctified', 'made holy', 'set apart', or 'very special', is this one:

קדשׁ
qâdash
kaw-dash'
A primitive root; to be (causatively make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally): - appoint, bid, consecrate, dedicate, defile, hallow, (be, keep) holy (-er, place), keep, prepare, proclaim, purify, sanctify (-ied one, self), X wholly.

Of course, the well-known use in the NT is in the Lord's Prayer-

Mat 6:9  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

And there, the Greek version:

ἁγιάζω
hagiazō
hag-ee-ad'-zo
From G40; to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate: - hallow, be holy, sanctify.

So what do we have in common?

- To make Holy
- Consecrate
- to be or keep holy
- clean, purified

So now, we ask ourselves, how does this apply to the text in Matthew?  Can we make God's name holy?  No, God does that.  Can we ceremonially consecrate it?  Hmmm.  If you keep in mind that consecrating isn't making something holy, but setting it apart for a purpose, yes we can.  We can tell ourselves, "If we are to hallow His Name, we have to set it apart for no other use but His Name."  And into that definition, all the others flow.

See, we aren't praying that God does this for Himself, we are praying that WE would remember to keep His Name to it's pure use, its set apart reason.  Not to attach it to some exclamation.  And this is no laughing matter to God.  Even the objects attached to His Name are serious business...

2Sa 6:6  And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
2Sa 6:7  And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.

Lev 10:1  Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them.
Lev 10:2  And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.
Lev 10:3  Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD has said, 'Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.'" And Aaron held his peace.

Joh 2:13  The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Joh 2:14  In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
Joh 2:15  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
Joh 2:16  And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade."
Joh 2:17  His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."

But we probably fail here- I fail here- more than any other command of God's.  So easy to do, since we are so trained to open our mouths without thinking.  I remember that same second grade me being very zealous to avoid such language- until a 6th grade me found out it "made me cool."  No, it just made me "hollered."  Lord, remind me daily to set Your Name apart, as hallowed, and give Your Name the awe and respect it deserves.

Time Machine Co-ordinates VIXCIV54251769

I'm just going to leave this here...

******************************************************

Today we go to May 17th, 1969- a day in which the world apparently took it easy after the worldwide celebrations of my 7th birthday (AKA nothing happened).  And we are going to do things a bit differently (again), first off, by announcing that NEXT week's guests will be...

...yes, the Beatles, as Get Back dominated this week in a way that has never really been seen on a Panel poll before.  They captured 62% of our vote for their hit (featuring Billy Preston), Get Back.  Thus, you'll get to guess who came in second- a much tighter and harder race than that for 1st!  Also, three new M10 debuts, another 6D on the fly, and whatever else I can find to shoehorn in here- and, yes, Bobby Goldsboro as our guest...

*************************************************

First up, the debut at #10, which I've been trying to get on here for a couple of weeks.  It is done by Canadian second-cousins Kacy Anderson and Clayton Linthicum, better known as Kacy and Clayton.  From their 2017 lp The Siren's Song, here are Kacy and Clayton...

********************************

Okay, we're here with Bobby Goldsboro...

Hi, thanks for having me...

Now Bobby, I have seen some of your future credits, and they are impressive... but music wise, you're not exactly everyone's cup of tea.  I see you started out on the road to stardom playing guitar for the Big O...

Yes, early on before I got out on my own, I did tour with Roy Orbison...

But that road to stardom wasn't always smooth.  Wiki lists the record for one artist peaking on the bubbling under chart as 14 for one act (Ray Charles), or under multiple names (Don Everly with one on his own and 13 with his brother, and the George Clinton Empire with 3 as Parliament, one as The Parliaments, 3 as Funkadelic, once as Brides of Funkenstein, twice as Bootsy's Rubber Band, once as William "Bootsy" Collins, and 3 under Clinton's own name)...

Where are we headed with this?

Well, Cashbox has you with 14 Bubbling Unders as well; Billboard gives you 11...

See, there you are.  Eleven it is.  But I was really close a couple of those times...

Yep, you had a 101 and a 102...

But now, compare that to my top 40s...

Well, how about that?  Eleven there as well....

Really?  Wait, though, that was the Cashbox chart, right?

No, Cashbox you had 10, plus one at #41.

Sigh, ups and downs, it is...

But, you did win the POTM, and thus get the high honor of doing this week's list of the second-placers behind Get Back's huge win... and you got it by winning a savage battle with Archie Bell...

"Yeah... and we ain't too happy about that..."

Yeah, well how many top forties did YOU have?

A: Uh, three..

B:  And how many Bubbling Unders?

A:  Uh, three...

B:  Oh ho ho ho ho....

Okay, so before we get all karma and symmetry here, how about you do the one hit wonders first, and then the rest can be in the final?

Fine!  Let's see here... The actual #1 song this week, the Cowsills and Hair... The Hawaii 5-0 theme by the Ventures, at #11... CCR's Bad Moon Rising, just rising itself at #46... Peter Sarstedt's Where Do You Go My Lovely, a big hit in Australia which just fell off of CB last week after hitting #70... We Can't Go There by the Unchained Mynds at #96... Elvis's In The Ghetto at #24... and the flip side of Get Back, Don't Let Me Down, at #57.

Alright, so our finalists have a grand total of 18, to Get Back's 41 out of 66.  But here they are, such as they are...

So you vote for second from...
Another Australian hit, Russel Morris with The Real Thing (which peaked here on Billboard at #107)...

Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer at #4...

Mercy with Love (Can Make You Happy) at #5...

The Guess Who with These Eyes at #6...

Edwin Hawkins Singers and Oh Happy Day at #10...

...and Ray Stevens with Guitarzan at #9.

Thanks, Bobby, for being a good sport!  There you have it.  Which song gets beat 41-5 this week?  Take your guesses, as you listen to the M10 debut at #9 this week- this is new from Moon Taxi...

*****************************************

All right, time for the LIVE 6D!

Okay, so what does our 6D song have in common with Richard Harris's McArthur Park, B Bumble and the Stingers' Nut Rocker, the Rip Chords' Hey Little Cobra, the Ronettes' Be My Baby, Guantanamera by the Sandpipers, No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) by the T-Bones, and even Nino Tempo and April Stevens' Deep Purple?  How about the most prolific guitarist maybe of all time, the Wrecking Crew alumnus Tommy Tedesco!  Yes, this virtuoso played on all these songs, as well as another song that was recorded in two cities- his part in LA, the vocals in Vegas.  This is a song that came about because the lead singer of the act in question lost his wallet.  Yes, lost his wallet; and it was found by a man involved in a new musical, to which the singer was invited.  in fact the whole band was invited- a band that was being put together as the "Black Mamas and Papas", if you can believe that!  The next day, their producer got a call in which the band was so excited they were talking over each other, basically all saying, "We HAVE to do this song!"

So the producer saw the show next, and devised a way to make it a hit, by combining the song they liked with a fragment of another song in the show.  And when the leader of the group laid down the vocal for that second part- improvising the whole way- no less a songwriter than Jimmy Webb, just passing through that day, told the producer- Bones Howe- "My God, that's a number one record!"  And he was right.

And to answer all of your questions:  The leader who lost the wallet was Billy Davis, Jr.  The show was, of course, Hair.  And the #1 song- at #2 this week without a Panel vote- was Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In by the 5th Dimension.

*******************************************

High Debut at #8- and the 398th M10 song- comes to us from the 2002 lp The Remote Part- this is Idlewild...

****************************************

That song peaked at #9 in the UK back then, which is as good a way as any to kick off our Stat Pack.  I say that because on two different spots on their chart for this week, you have a song listed at a particular spot, up from another particular spot- followed by a different song at that SAME spot, with a different 'last week' position- followed by the FIRST song a second time, but with the same last week number.  Confused?  Here's the first example:  it has our 6D song, Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In, at #22, up from 25.  Then, also at #22, it has a totally different song, up from 28.  Then, that is followed at #23 by Aquarius again also up from 25.  The same thing happens at 30-31, but then the pattern changes- at 36 and 47, they simply repeat the position number twice, skipping the next one and going on to the second following (36-36-38 and 47-47-49).  So I declared the whole thing suspect and recorded nothing but the #1 song this week.

Which, of course, was Get Back.

At the #69 in '69 we had Dionne Warwick with The April Fools, an eventual (and just barely) top 40 from the Jack Lemmon movie of the same name.

At #101 we have a sighting of the Bob Seger System and Ivory.  Not bad, but not on a level with fellows from the same lp Ramblin Gamblin Man and 2+2 is?

The big mover is a former M10 song- Dusty Springfield's The Windmills Of Your Mind, going from 75 to 47, 28 spots.

Our special debuts this week include Andy Kim's Baby I Love You at #86, Oliver's Good Morning Starshine at #78, and Jr Walker and the All-Stars with What Does It Take at #74.

And which song would I have had at the top that week, based on my known tastes back then and chart positions?  I would say Love (Will Make You Happy).  I've always loved that song, and how it made me feel back then.

********************************************************

The remaining M10:

Well, I didn't listen- I kept around Maybird's Don't Keep Me Around, though the former #1 slips to #7 this week.

The two hot debuts from last week each climb 3 spots-  Skindred's That's My Jam to #6, and King Leg's Seeing You Tonight to #5.

And the next pair move up one each- ELO's Long Black Road to #4, and Criminal Hygiene's Hardly News to #3.

I guess I will have to come up with one of my nicknames for the duo at the top- The Dig hold at #2 with Moonlight Baby...

And the top, for a second week-

...Tame Impala with Eventually !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, ready to see who came in second?  If you took Russell Morris, Simon and Garfunkel, or Ray Stevens, congrats!  You got 3% of the vote.

Edwin Hawkins netted you 4.5%...

The Guess Who logged in with 6%...

But our winner- well, winner of the worst whupping in TM history- with 7.5%...

....Mercy and Love (Can Make You Happy).  Unfortunately, their cries for mercy went unheeded...

...so tune in next week for the REAL Beatles- and since I hired Horace Bellbottom* to work for me...

... I think we can guarantee they'll be here to help with 1970!

* As the esteemed barrister Bellbottom doesn't exist, I decided to co-opt the closest thing to my thoughts on him Google could provide.  Henceforth, the part of our lawyer will be played by one Horace Bell, who had a rather lengthy and interesting adventure of life himself- and did eventually become a lawyer, though he would have had to have lived to at least 138 to ever work for Apple Records.

Life goes on

...and I need to get out and get in better shape.  Thus, I am back to the longer walks, and to taking pictures...

Tuesday was a much nicer day

I love the little maple guys...

Sitting in the peace of the bridge... praying for strength and forgiveness

Yesterday at this point, a duck came soaring up through there, cleared the bridge by about 6 feet, and nearly pooped on me when I said, "Veer left!"

This day, this guy hung around me the whole time I sat there.

Later, the scuffling Bluebird of Happiness came by...

And Turtle season at the Swamp is officially open.

"What was the Fire Marshall's room capacity again?"

Then we come to Wednesday's walk- a reverse of the infamous 'Walk from Hell' through Canterbury...

A view of the never-ending construction

My first time down the new sidewalk across the bridge

Lots of swallows getting breakfast

Meanwhile in Canterbury- what's wrong with this picture?

Me and Scrappy had a picnic here a long time ago

I'd heard of Goose Island Beer, but here's the real thing- and it sounded like a civil war!  Assuming the ones on the island weren't interested in sharing with those in the water
Kids are all asleep.
