Today, we go to August 9th, 1958.  This is the day Cliff Richard signed his first record deal with EMI!

20 days later, his first single, called Move It (originally the b side of Schoolboy Crush) would be released, and the rest is history.  It's all I got for today, but it beats Butch Vig's birthday in a 6 Degrees, amIrite?

Welcome to a much more normal Time Machine, wherein Elvis makes his fourth trip to the POTM podium, three new debuts on the M10, and oy, the trouble I had with the big mover this week!  So now that the lead-in is back on a diet, let's have at it!

So now I'm going to confuse everybody just for a moment and move us ahead- to September 15th, 1962. I was a day away from being 4 months old, and music around the world looked like this:  In both the UK and Australia, Frank Ifield's I Remember you was on top; Ray Charles' I Can't Stop Loving You was tops in Holland, Denmark, and Israel; in India, the #1 was Cliff's Shadows with Guitar Tango.  The Philippines and Hong Kong each had local versions of Al Di La.  And among the English songs on other charts, Paul Anka had A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine at #4 in Argentina and #3 in Spain; the Champs had their version of Limbo Rock at #6 in Japan- and Peru had a local version at #5.  Italy's highest English tune was the intriguingly named St Tropez Twist at #3; and Mexico, while it didn't have any English tunes, had local versions of Norman at 4 and Johnny Get Angry at 6.   And we care why?  Well, it will have something to do with the upcoming 6D song- sorta- but in the meantime, let's bop back to 1958....

Stat Pack time!

The hardest thing there was the biggest mover.   I kept finding another bigger mover after the one I wrote down, but  had a good reason.  You see, after several weeks of big movers that never cleared 19 places moved, I had SEVEN that moved 20 or more this week:

Also, our #58 in '58 belonged to Tony and Joe.  Who?  Well, Joe Saraceno (best known for producing The Ventures) and Tony Savonne (who's real name was-huh?- Henry Imel), who got together to do a Bandstand inspired dance number called The Freeze.  Just another BTW- It was Joe who changed an unknown band's name from the Pendletones- to the Beach Boys...


The UK #1 this week was All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everlys; they also picked off two of the big debuts, with Devoted To You at 37 and Bird Dog at 32.  The other big debut was Eddie Cochrane's Summertime Blues.  And out of the 16 songs I knew on the list prior to Time Machine, I'd say that the Elegants and Little Star would have been my #1.
