M10 show week #45

This week, we have another Spotify streamers contest, and it involves two made-for-TV acts:

Yes, the Monkees vs the Partridge Family!  I'm going to root for the Monkees, just because I've misspelled Partridge 3 times now, trying to get the facts'n'figures we need!

Elvis:  Hey, but the Parterges- or whutever- they got Susan Dey, who was a Beauty Contest finalist one year!

Oh, that is true!  Let me rethink this, while we play the first of 2 debuts!  These 2 make 706 and 707 on the list of M10 songs- we missed the 700th debut, a couple weeks back when Pale Waves hit with Clean.  This first one at #9, we found having a family music night- which involved the top Monkees streamed songs!  But it's not the Monkees- from the 1964 Rag Doll lp, here are the Four Seasons!

************************************************************

How many times does that make, you goin' back and findin' some old Four Seasons song?

Five, including their #1 version of Walk On ByAnd since I just tried to spell "of" as "fo", I guess that means I'm back to neutral on the battle.  Speaking of which...

(NOTE:  I have discovered in some places they put different versions of the same song in their top tens; these songs will only count ONCE.  I'll also slide in that when you try to Google this for ELO, you get a very odd list of barely listened-to live versions that are far from what you find on ELO's Spotify home page.)

10- For the Monkees, it was Tapioca Tundra, a #34 that nets them 1 point. For TPF, Walking In The Rain, which was released but did not chart, so 1-0.

9- Monkees, A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, a #2 hit that puts them at 10 points.  For TPF,  Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque, an album cut from their first lp, so now 10-0.

Oh, boy, here we go again...

Hang in there, buddy!  8- (I'd Go The) Whole Wide World, a cut from a Mickey-Peter-Davy lp from 1987 called Pool It!; it only charted on Adult Contemporary. TPF had the first of 2 consecutive versions of I'll Meet You Halfway, a #9 that makes it 10-2.

That sucks for them...

The Monkees get hit by the curse a little later, so it evens out. 7- The Monkees had Pleasant Valley Sunday, a #3 for 8 points; TPF had the other Halfway, so now it's 18-2.

And at the halfway point, ironically enough: 6- Monkees, (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone, a #20 b-side that gives them 1 point; TPF, It's One Of Those Nights (Yes Love), also a #20 peak that makes it 19-3.

Man these battles are gettin' like Thursday Night Football...

Nothing could be THAT bad!  Our second debut comes in at #8, and is one of 2 on this week's ten by the lovely ladies of Lucius...

*******************************************************

All right, here comes the big comeback!

You think?

You bet!  C'mon, Susan!

5- The Monkees, Last Train To Clarksville, a solid #1 for ten points; TPF, Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted, a #6 that makes the score 29- 8.

4- The Monkees, get the first of 2 versions of I'm A Believer, a #1- but it is listed as a mix, so it gets it's chart position of "did not chart", and thus they get a bagel. TPF, I Can Feel Your Heartbeat, another first lp cut that- as much as they played it on the show- I can't believe they never released. No score change.

3- Monkees,  Me And Magdalena, a very good song by Mike off the reunion lp Good Times! , which has had four M10 hits- just not this one.  Another bagel for the boys. TPF, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, the Neil Sedaka cover that made #28, so now it's 29-9.

Well, SOMEbody's gonna need a couple of 10-0's to pull this one out...

Good observation- so why don't you do the rest of the M10 and we'll see if a miracle is in the offing.

O'course, o'course!

10- Lucius with their other hit, Love Is The Disaster, down 5 in week #7.

7- Pulling into a tie for #13th all time, Dent May's second week at 7 with Crying Laughing.

6- Up three for Beck an' Old Man.

5- An' fallin' once again, Wilco an' Hearts Hard To Find, down 3.

4- Up six fer Molly Rankin an' Alvvays with After The Earthquake.

3- Zach Williams climbs 1 here- an' holds at #13 on the Christian chart- with Heart Of God.

2- Four notch climb for Built To Spill an' Comes A Day.

And week #2 at the top fer...

...Broken Bells an' Love On The Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, Boss, give 'em the bad news...

Say, you certainly gave up fast!

10-0 TWICE? Please.

Well, then...

2- Monkees, Daydream Believer, a #1 for ten points...

BOOM!

... and TPF, Woke Up In Love, a #13 that makes it 39-10.

And at the top of their lists...

For the Monkees, I'm A Believer, this time getting its #1 points... for the Partridges, I Think I Love You, also a #1 that leaves our final score 49-20!

Geez, we gotta find us an evener battle!

"Evener"?

"Fo"?

Sigh....

  1. I knew the Monkees would trounce TPF, but it was fun, anyway. ☺ Some excellent, well-known songwriters contributed to the Monkees' catalogue, so it was inevitable. Pleasant Valley Sunday is one of my favourites, written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.

Your second video came up as not available, but if you tell me the name of the song, I'll look for it.

Since Halloween is coming up, how about Alice Cooper vs Smashing Pumpkins? ☺

    1. That would be Lucius with The Man I'll Never Find (Piano version). A Pumpkins battle would involve crossing charts (as they would show up on alt), but I will look as to its feasibility. After all, our only bounds are my imagination, I suppose...

    2. I'll leave it to you, to decide. I think Alice would prevail. ☺ Found the video! Pleasant voice.
