M10 show, week #28

So this week, I lead off with some news I really didn't want to...

Jim Seals (wearing the headgear) of Seals and Crofts passed away on the 6th.  In true Time Machine fashion, he leaves us, in addition to a fantastic body of work, a couple of my wonderful ironies.  One, he and his brother Dan- a country star on his own and a pop star as "England Dan" with John Ford Coley- each were the first of their respective partnerships to pass on.  John, as well as Dash Crofts, are still with us; Dan passed in 2009. Second, Jim was either 79 or 80- no one rightly knows, as apparently there was some controversy about his birth year that he never bothered to clear up.  And finally, the duo is known for their 3 top ten hits- 1972's Summer Breeze, 1973's Diamond Girl, and 1976's Get Closer- all of which peaked on Billboard at #6. (Cashbox also had Summer Breeze peak at #6, but Diamond Girl at #8, and Get Closer at #7.)

Elvis.  Wow, that's too bad.  Say, mebbe you could get him a guest shot here...

Sorry, Bud, Baha'i's get a different afterlife... anyway, we need to liven things up a bit now, so how about you intro our one Debut this week...

Sure, why not!  At #9, and fer the first time havin' 2 songs on the ten at the same time, here are the Knocks- this time with alt stars the Cold War kids...

*************************************************************

So who all have these guys teamed up with on yer countdown?

And excellent question!  Whist I retrieve the answers, you carry on that feature we started last week, giving the Cashbox summer #1s this week! This week, we're doing the 8's and 9's!

Hang on, cowboy!  Whut about that you don't do '78 an' '79?

We're just gonna ignore that and give whatever's in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, how's that sound?

Good enuff! So in the 8's...

1958 this week, the Everly Brothers an' All I Have To Do Is Dream, last of its 4 weeks on top...

1968 this week, Simon and Garfink.. funk... the curly headed one, with Mrs Robinson, second week of 4...

...and in 1978 this week, second week of 6 for Andy Gibb an' Shadow Dancing!

Good job!  Now, about the Knocks' guests on their M10 hits...

First it was singer/producer Matthew Koma (AKA Mr Hilary Duff) on I Wish (My Taylor Swift);

Second was Classic with M10 stars of their own, Powers;

Third came Walk The Moon on  Saving The Best For Last;

Fourth, Absofacto on the song Trouble;

Fifth, Foster The People guested on Ride Or Die;

And sixth, Sofi Tukker on Brazillian Soul.

Not to mention, of course, the guests currently on the M10- Cannons and the Cold War Kids.

So, should I know any o' these guys?

Maybe not you yourself, but the audience should know that Walk The Moon had the big 2014 hit Shut Up And Dance (the #6 Billboard tune for 2015), Foster The People had a #3 in 2010 with Pumped Up Kicks (#13 on the year end 2011 charts), and the M10 #1 Sit Next To Me, which was top ten across Billboard's various rock and alt charts, and Cold War Kids had the song First, which spent 7 weeks in 2015 on top of the BB Alt chart.  Also, Sofi Tukker's Best Friend was a #1 dance track in 2017 ( and was on a iPhone ad); Absofacto hit the top of the alt chart in 2015 with Dissolve; and Cannons had an alt #1 in 2019 with Fire For You!

Ok, I got it.  What else is up this week?

Well, the tens and the nines...

Huh?

I'll do the number ones from the 9's; you do this week's M10!

    1. I thought so, too, and a couple of those songs mentioned in the Knocks feature may soon be among the ten!

  2. I had no idea England Dan was Jim Seals' brother! May they R.I.P.

    All songs from the 8s and 9s were familiar to me. Hot Stuff is one of the few Disco songs I like, along with a few other Donna Summer and Bee Gees tunes.

    The Knocks sound pretty good. Thanks for the introduction!

    1. I had a country phase in the mid 80's, and Dan was big stuff then on the country charts. I always liked the joke Jim (I think) told about that, had Dan and John hit first, it would have made them "England Jim and Dash Ford Crofts"!
