Time Machine co-ordinates VICXLIII6235771
So today is May 8th, and we're in 1971- and unless you want sports, I don't have a good lead in. I thought I might have something interesting when I saw "Missouri statehood for sale"- but then I saw "8c stamp" in front of it and that was that. However, we have the Guess Who- and not at Percy Faith's suggestion this time, either! To be honest with you, I have no idea what else is going to happen here today, so why not start out with a LIVE 6D!

We're gonna run into Stevie Wonder a lot in this tale, and not because he's blind and we're drunk! Our tale begins with the Beach Boys first lp after Brian gave the production reins to brother Carl- Wild Honey. Mike Love says the title track- which hit #31 Billboard- was written "from the perspective of Stevie Wonder singing it", so says Wiki. They actually covered a hit by Stevie, I Was Made To Love Her, on said album. Since we're sneaking up on Mother's Day, I notice that this song- like a few others in his repertoire, was co-written by Stevie's mom, Lula Mae Hardaway. She also co-wrote Signed Sealed Delivered, which comes into play because Peter Frampton covered it on I'm In You- an lp which Stevie also made a guest harmonica appearance on. The silly ironic thing I noticed was that Pete's version hit 18 on BB, but #13 on Cashbox. And I found that funny because the same lp that Stevie's original came out on- also called Signed Sealed Delivered- had him covering a Beatles tune, which hit #13 as well. But it did so on BB, while on Cashbox it was at #9 this week without a Panel Vote- We Can Work It Out.

Well, guys, how was the pizza?
Garry: Man, that's a cheesy pizza. dude!
Yep, just the way I like it! Now here we have a different lineup than what you had a few weeks ago...
Burton: Weeks? It's been 4 years!
For you, but not me and the audience. So right now your time, you're working on So Long, Bannatyne, and Albert Flasher is climbing the charts.
Kurt: Yeah, it's coming together...
I gotta tell you, I love this lp. Some of my favorite childhood memories include Albert Flasher, Rain Dance, Sour Suite, Life In The Bloodstream...
Jim: That corny thing? All that doo-wop stuff...
B: C'mon, Jim, it had a deeper meaning, too...
G: Yeah, like we were a 'little too high' when you wrote it...
(Laughter)
Anyway, I have always rooted for you guys to win a Panel poll, and you finally did... this week though...
G: This week, Joy To The World gave 'em a butt-whoopin'!
B: GARRY, you hoser! You weren't supposed to tell them...
He's right, though, Three Dog Night had more votes than the Panel had contestants- a whopping 37% of the vote, and a 20 vote lead over 2nd place. Did you just say, 'hoser'?
K: So, like what do we do now?
J: Just introduce the runner-ups and let 'em vote on that! Helluva lot closer, anyway...
B: Hey, can I get a word in edgewise?
Greg: They're sorry, BC. Go ahead.
J: 'Bout time you opened yer mouth, Leskiw...
B: Anyway, why don't we just do the runners-up? It's a closer race anyway....
J: Seems like I heard that somewhere...
Well, it works for me... I guess. 23 songs, 78 stations, 3DN wins the big prize, let's have the runner-up race...
B: Listen up ladies and gentlemen: the runner up choices are...
K: Daddy Dewdrop and Chick-A-Boom (Don't Yew Jus' Love It), at #8...
J: Put Your Hand In The Hand by our fellow Canucks, Ocean, at #2...
Garry: Never Can Say Goodbye by the Jackson 5 at #3...
B: And all-girl band The Fuzz with I Love You For All Seasons at #21!
Greg, didn't you want to say anything?
Gregg: ' I hope a little boy don't fall down an' skin his knee...'

One M10 debut this week, and it's the Pretenders at #9...

So we had a couple of contests this week, and one of them...
...involved a pair of Panelists, one of them a finalist- or semi-finalist, as the case may be. Put Your Hand In The Hand- a song I found was originally recorded by Anne Murray- also got a couple votes (including the return of the Laurenco Marques song of the week) for a version by South Africa's Allan Garrity! So we played them against each other, and...
Laurie: Ocean. I kind of lost track of Allan's version, so I guess that means I didn't like it!
Chris: Ocean. 1- female vocal, you know how I am. 2- Allan's version, he had a harder edge to his voice I didn't care for.
The other one involved one Panelist- an Aussie vote for Lally Stott's original version of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep. This is a tune that was covered in the UK by Scottish band Middle Of The Road, and in the USA by Mac and Katie Kissoon. We left Mac and Katie out and put Lally up against Sally (Carr, lead voice of MOTR), and here's how it came out:
Laurie: I didn't like his, I don't like it when they try to sing a fast song slow. MOTR.
Chris: MOTR. Sally Carr, people...

So, the stat pack includes the big mover being Murray Head and the Trinidad Singers with Superstar (from Jesus Christ Superstar, of course), up 33 spots from 56 to 23; and the UK #1 this week, Dave and Ansell Collins and their reggae hit Double Barrel, another of those songs that make me question the British taste, but then again I don't like tea either.

The rest of the M10:
Anna Burch slides down to #10 with Tell Me What's True, a 4 notch fall in week #8.
Dropping an even steeper 6 to #8 is Black Joe Lewis and Five Dollars. That's 2 weeks in a row 2 fell to 8.
Jammed up by some fast risers, Jana Kramer held in place in 7th with Untouchable.
The Stones were one of those risers, up 3 to 6 with Living In A Ghost Town.
Similar to Jana, Brooke Annibale found her progress arrested at #5 with Under Streetlights.
Albert Hammond digs in his heels, slipping only one more to 4 with former #1 Set To Attack.
Last time Deradoorian was in the countdown, there was also a Ghost Town in the countdown- one by Adam Lambert. Coincidence? Well, her first trip was 2 weeks at #10. This week she ascends 7 big notches to #3 with Monk's Robes.
Caroline Rose braves that unlucky #2 slot, up 2 with my big earworm for the week, Do You Think We'll Last Forever.
And that means continuing at #1....
...Maddie and Tae with I Don't Need To Know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the (semi) finalists?
The Fuzz end up with 5.1%...
Both Daddy Dewdrop and Ocean get 6.4%...
So the Jacksons take the "What, at this point, does it really matter" sweepstakes with 11.5%...
And be here next week when we have first timers Three Dog Night in 1972!
